I'm a big proponent of changing your hair. Colors, cuts, you name it!

It's not a lack of self-acceptance. It's an embrace of an ever-changing self.

And I think that's pretty beautiful.

🤍

When I love someone or something, I will rave about them all day long and go to bat for them 110%. The @cosmicrevival_salon team? 7/7 days of the week, baby! Nothing makes me happier than a Cosmic Revival visit. ✨ NOTHING. Well… maybe except following it up with a sweet treat and coffee. 🤭

I've been taking a lot of time for myself this past year, mostly offline. I keep plenty private, but I wanted to share a few things in case they help other people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), or the people who love them.⠀
⠀
I wrote up 11 changes I made this year on my blog, Chronically Climbing, that have made a real difference in how I manage my T1D. ⠀
⠀
Comment "CHANGE" and I'll DM you the post where I share the 11 things I've changed. 🧡⠀
⠀
Maybe this walkthrough will help you or someone you love, too. As always, this isn't medical advice, just some tips from one person living with T1D for others living with it or those who love them.⠀

🍊 Would you believe it if I told you THIS is how I learned to dose my insulin?

And this is what I've learned since that time... nearly 23 years ago?

Type 1 diabetes is certainly not a dream, but knowing the signs and acting on them means it doesn’t have to be a nightmare, either.⠀
⠀
When I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a child, I didn’t know what was happening to my body. Looking back, there were signs—but I didn’t know what they meant.⠀
⠀
That’s why sharing our stories matters. Someone else may be experiencing those same symptoms right now and wondering what’s wrong.⠀
⠀
Know the signs. Trust your instincts. Take action. 🧡⠀
⠀
Want to know what my diagnosis was really like? Read my full story through the link in my bio.⠀

This isn't a sob story. It's a "so what?" story.

So what if I have to take insulin for the rest of my life?
So what if my pancreas doesn't work anymore?
So what if I have to prick my finger every day?
So what if I am different than other kids?
So what if I have to pay attention to my highs and lows?
So what? I'll still get to live a fulfilling life.

That wasn't how I felt at first.

It took at least four weeks for me to turn the corner at grief and drive towards acceptance. I was 10. Some days, I still find myself grinding that corner to find that path again.

Because accepting this disease feels like letting the frustration, burnout, and pain win. But here's the thing... it was never about letting it win. It was about acknowledging its place, and leaning in, learning to deal with it all. The good. The bad. The ugly.

And realizing that everyone has to figure that out, regardless of diabetes. Realizing that diabetes isn't the main plot point. It's just a part of the picture. The whole picture is you.

At first, being diagnosed with T1D felt like living in a new body or trying to level a compass I didn't know how to operate. My body felt foreign, as if I didn't belong in it.

And yet, there I was, sitting in the back of my fourth grade classroom, living in that feeling. Like a bolt of lightning, one day came a switch. It felt as if something had taken over. People were proud of me. I fed into that. I felt empowered. As if people had something to be impressed by.

But that wasn't real acceptance. That was performative joy. Maybe even people pleasing.

The first few years came with a lot of deprivation to maintain tight control, which mostly came from fear of the repercussions of not doing that.

Over time, I learned how much I could venture outside of those guidelines. I learned how to craft my own. That's where true growth and acceptance came. It's when I finally stopped leading with my chronic illness and learned to lead with me while T1D followed.

It took time. To process. To grieve. To accept.

Sometimes, it still does. But the biggest difference today is that I truly feel that I am more than T1D. I don't just know it. That's worth talking about. by @missjflar

Took one for the team: can confirm that pumpkin spice topping does NOT cure type 1 diabetes. 🎃🙅‍♀️ (Neither does cinnamon!!!)

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) wins are just as important to acknowledge as T1D losses.

I realize that for some people, someone else’s wins can lead to comparison. For others, they inspire and motivate. And sometimes, it’s not that deep at all. We can let someone else celebrate what went right for them today when we’re in the middle of an icky streak, and vice versa.

Someone else’s T1D management shouldn’t define your own. Community is about showing up and caring for each other through circumstances we sometimes can’t personally relate to.

One thing you should know about me is that I want to be someone who can show up for you even when I’m going through a tough T1D patch myself. That’s kind of life. It’s friendship. It’s family. That’s what community means to me.

While this is an extremely personal disease, I also believe we can’t take each other’s personal management too personally. No one knows our bodies like we do. There’s confidence in that. Security. Comfort. Safety.

There’s also something freeing about letting ourselves be who we are, owning how we show up and manage our diabetes when it works for us, being able to say “that sucks” when we fall off the horse, and not needing someone else to exactly reflect our own experience to prove they’re human or that they struggle, too.

I realized I had started sharing the bad side more than the good lately, and I wasn’t okay with that.

I want to reframe how I show up, not by saying, “look how well I’m doing!” but by allowing myself to enjoy the fruits of my labor, too.

Because I don’t think we need to live entirely in the ups and downs. There’s a middle ground, and I think it’s a lot more peaceful and supportive there.

🤎
