Saturdays in Ubud usually kick off with a Greg Kaps Hatha class @theyogabarn followed by a brisk walk to the organic market outside Pizza Bagus then a zoom across town to the delightful @moksaubud farmers market 💛🥭🍍
The produce here is so flavoursome and fresh and the farmers and stallholders are incredibly friendly. They feed me breakfast while I shop ☺️. It’s also cheaper than the conventional produce at the supermarket 😉.

I loved all the buah dan sayur-sayuran especially the mangoes, guava, dragonfruit and really appreciated the Durian. My driver friend @namobalii also enjoyed the smell in his taxi for the next four days 😂 sorry Namo. Thanks for capturing me in my element here and for driving so safely!

At the wonderful @byronfarmers market today showing off our certified organic farmers to Jessie Nichols the International Technical Specialist and an organic certifier from @ccoforganic the legendary organisation based in Santa Cruz, California. ☀️

With the themes of Jessie’s Extended Education project aligning with the hot topics of our organic movement right now, we obviously have a lot to still talk about! 😆 The project involves comparing organic farming and certification systems in California and Australia, looking at what California and the US would look like if they hadn’t advocated for a federal organic regulation (where we are at now) whilst also collecting growers’ and consumers’ perspectives of our voluntary certification scheme in Australia. I know we have some work to do here and are making progress too. 😊💚🌱

It’s always organic awareness month in my mind 😂 however during September @australianorganic #aoam2023 I enjoyed connecting with a great number of people involved in organic and biodynamic farming, retailing, wholesaling, certification and education, those who are interested in making the organic switch and those who aren’t but still use the word organic for marketing purposes.

I dispersed resources for organically minded shoppers, spoke to Rasela on Belly at BayFM, presented to a group of influencers (organic farmers 😉) and the @santosorganics team at their Grow the Growers event, sold fruit with Georgia @mtchowanorganicfarm 😍🍌🥑, learned more about the organic certification process from @southerncrosscertified 🌱🦘… and had discussions and wrote letters to a few conventional farmers in the area using the organic term deceptively.

My intention is to grow the demand for organic and biodynamic food and products in Australia through increasing awareness to the benefits and importance of the traditional farming method. I will continue to celebrate and highlight the work of organic farmers who keep us healthy and keep toxic chemicals out of our waterways, air and land whilst campaigning with the organic industry for regulation of the term organic and calling out all the green washing 👀 along the way.

Until it is regulated in Australia, if you’re buying organic produce and products, look for the certification logos wherever you shop.

I love organic and biodynamic farmers THIS much! 💚🌱

We enjoyed a wonderful gathering in celebration of @australianorganic Awareness Month last night with @santosorganics hosted by @paddock_project with many local, certified organic and soon to be certified organic farmers and the Santos team.

The event was an opportunity to appreciate the commitment of organic and biodynamic farmers to our health and local environment and recognise Santos’ Grow the Growers Project. This is an excellent initiative that has supported a number of local organic growers in becoming certified this year. These farmers are then able to supply Santos with their produce which is of huge benefit to the community, having a high percentage of food available from local farms at the stores.

We also had the opportunity to learn from organic farmers including Dave Forrest, Andrew Cameron, Environmental Laboratory Manager and Researcher Graham Lancaster and the Santos Organics team Grace, Jolene and Paula.

Thank you for a wonderful evening @santosorganics and @paddock_project 🎵 I’m looking forward to the next one!

With so many conventional/chemical farmers and businesses deceptively using the word organic to improve their bottom line, organic certification is essential in Australia to provide assurance and accountability to organically minded shoppers. As a farmer or creator of organic products it adds value to your offerings.

Whilst most of us recognise Australian Organic’s “bud”, there are a number of nationally accredited certification bodies and organisations providing reputable auditing/certification services in Australia. Look for any of the logos in these slides when shopping for organics.

Unlike many other countries, there is no legal regulation regarding the term “organic” on products in Australia. I’ve seen it used on conventional beauty products, a tea company, seedlings grower and a huge food market just in the past week. 😳

The industry associations and certification bodies are finally joining forces to have this amended as soon as possible. Whilst ACCC do have repercussions for companies making false claims and misleading impressions and state that one needs to substantiate the claim (if asked) when labelling a product as organic, a blanket law on labelling will be a win for organic farmers, product manufacturers and all of us, organic people. 💚🌱

How do you know if a farmer is legitimately organic? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.. by answering all of your questions openly, sharing their wisdom and experience and maybe even opening their gates for a tour!

Authentic organic farmers have always been delighted to chat about the farming methods and conditions required to grow purely organically, sharing how they look after the soil and manage insects, weeds and fungal issues that may arise on the farm. All for our wellbeing and in consideration to the natural environment.

Thank you @thebioorganicfarm for opening your home to the community, showing us how our food is grown and sharing why you grow organically. It was a perfect day of learning, connection and of course a celebration of wholesome food with an amazing feast prepared by Basil. This farm has grown incredibly since my first visit and first ever lettuce harvest here in 2010 😂 (last pic).

I respect the long hours and lifetime commitment made by farmers and value the opportunity to visit. I always come away from these events with even more gratitude and appreciation for the way they grow the food that nourishes, heals and transforms our health and lives. Organic fresh produce is the real deal plant medicine. 🌱💚

Raising awareness in our local community during Australian Organic Awareness Month! 💚🌱

A common misconception shared is that everything sold at a farmers market is organic. I’ve heard too many farmers unfortunately tell potential customers that they’re organic when they aren’t, so these posters displayed at every certified organic stand encourage more transparency and correct labelling. People who value nutritious food and organic and biodynamic farming know where to shop.

During this month I am encouraging and assisting certified organic and biodynamic farmers in displaying certifications on stalls and improving signage so that we can recognise and support your incredible work and commitment to our health and the environment.

A veggie Madras curry alongside Pepe’s purple cauliflower, green salad and rice. All produce certified organic or biodynamic and grown within 50km of home (even the rice!).

I put Frank Walker’s or Mt Chowan’s pumpkin in most curries and stews, I love the way it melts in, thickens and sweetens the dish. @spice_zen spice mixes also make everything tastier.

Seasonal eating is not a trend it is a return to traditional/original food and farming techniques (before we began shipping food cross country and overseas) honouring natures’ and our own cycles.

Each fruit and veggie requires particular growing conditions, temperatures, sunlight and soil conditions to grow effectively and nutritiously. Therefore it makes sense to eat what grows naturally and seasonally without the use of conventional farming chemicals that are used without regulation across our country and earth. Thankfully I live in a region with so many certified organic and biodynamic farmers growing food in optimal season for the community.

We don’t have any organic blueberries grown in this area during winter so I am drawn to other great berries like strawberries, gooseberries and native berries which we buy from @consciousground @singingfarmerorganics @summitorganics 🍓

Shop at the certified organic and biodynamic farmers’ stalls at your local markets to find out what is truly seasonal to your region. 💚🌱
