Last week I was in a studio for the first time in a very long time. Really in a studio. As a performer.

I've spent the last 20 years supporting other people's art making — evaluating it, developing it, teaching it. I have loved it and been honoured to do this.

Before that, though, I spent 15 years making my own dance/physical theatre.

Somewhere in between, I stopped. Life took a different turn and my creativity flowed elsewhere.

But I'm not stopping anymore.

I was lucky enough to get a DYCP grant from @aceagrams last summer, to help lift my writing off the page and into performance.

So, I'm working on a new show.

This is the beginning of sharing the mess and the magic of this process.

The five days were so energising, joyous and wholly due to my extraordinary collaborators.

Huge thanks to the one and only @renumusic, all-seeing Yael Shavit (dramaturg) and my longest collaborator of all ...Debjani Banerjee (set and visual world) for holding this with me.

Thank you also to @attenboroughac for their incredible generosity in supporting this work, a reminder of why spaces like this matter so much.

And to everyone who came and sat in that circle, you gave me something I didn't know I needed.

More soon. 🙏🏽

Amazing to meet Akram again after so many years and introduce my kids to him. His work always blows my mind but “Jungle Book Reimagined” is one of his most innovative, powerful, accessible and relevant pieces of dance theatre / performances that I have ever seen. So proud you chose Leicester for the previews and premiere. taken in CURVE theatre, Leicester by @mitapujara

The Wonder That is Mr Kavi Pujara.

Ever since we moved here four years ago, Kavi been going out on a near daily basis - in the rain, wind or shine to photograph the community who live and work on Leicester's 'Golden Mile.' This long road is famous for its sweet shops, gold jewellery, glitzy sari-dressed window displays, delicious chaat (Indian street food) and chai houses. Less well documented is the fact that it is home to two separate waves of Gujarati migrants who moved to the UK for a better life. One arrived in the 1970s (my parents in laws generation) and another from the islands of Daman and Diu over the last decade. The project is called named after the city's Latin motto, 'Semper Eadem' which translates as 'always the same'.

It is not a digital project. Kavi has spent real time there, hanging out, observing the buildings, the light and speaking to locals and getting to know the community (and, obviously eating the odd excellent samosa!). He's been working with a really old fashioned camera with legs (I think the profs call it Medium Format) which he then sets up only if the person he's been chatting to agrees to be photographed. The labour of love doesn't end there.

He processes them himself at home and over the years I've come to be able to gauge his levels of success by the three distinct sounds which emerge.
1. There is silence (most common) which means "nothing at all here today"
2. A low 'hmmm' which mean "there is probably nothing at all here today... "
3. An audible 'hmmm' from another room which means "there probably nothing at all here although maybe..."

Other than these - I've rarely heard anything else.

Today, I am SO PROUD to share the news that this image was one of the 100 winning images of 'Portrait of Britain 2020'. It will be published in the British Journal of Photography booand featured on bus stops and billboards around the UK in September. BTW if you do spot it please let us know we have no idea where they will be.

Those of us who know Kavi are well aware of his talent and artistry but it's wonderful to witness others recognising this. From the bottom of my heart, Kavs, I wish you all the power to continue to go out in wind, r by @mitapujara

My lovely mate Nikita Lalwani who wrote Gifted and The Village spent the last few years of her life writing this, her third novel - whilst also raising three gorgeous kids and teaching writing. Bloody miracle in itself if you ask me. I can’t wait to read it. Covid 19 stopped her book launch tonight sadly 😢- we were absolutely gutted to not be there to celebrate this moment with her. If you can ...please buy it and read it - if not please share, spread the word. Get the hardback, the ebook or audiobook today from Amazon. The book is officially on sale from tomorrow.💕📙📚enjoy #arts #goodreads #London #novels #thirdnovel #refugeees #migration #asylum @refugees @refugeeaction @chooselove @dfdubz @theguiltyfeminist by @mitapujara
