💐 💐💐Celebrating the late trailblazing polymath Dr. Olu Taiwo (artist, dancer, choreographer, capoeirista, tai chi don, musician, street artist, academic, poet), who held space for all lived experiences with extraordinary skill, generosity, and equity.

Thank you to Rebecca (Olu’s partner, dance artist, educator) who first introduced me to Olu nearly 30 years ago, and to Onioluwa, Kunle, and all the family and friends for inviting me to last Friday’s beautiful memorial celebration at Salisbury Arts Centre. What a beautiful gathering a fitting party for a giant in every human sense of the word. ❤️

Having taught me as a member of the YOUTH! Dance Company at The Place, and through independent summer residencies led by @mitapujara (then part of Pan Intercultural Arts), Olu’s practical and theoretical wisdom continues to pulse through me grounding how I hold space for ancestral discourse, the bedrock of contemporary practice, sustainability, and new technologies.

His doctoral thesis The Return Beat remains deeply influential, a cornerstone of performance philosophy. It was a no-brainer to invite him as a panellist during my Guest Programmer tenure at @danceumbrella 2018 - a proud and special moment among fellow stellar artists. 📸slide-2

✨ Thank you, Olu - for meeting me where I was that morning of tai chi, and not judging me when I got completely wasted on my 21st birthday during a residency. You did warn me that champagne, wine, spirits, and salmon were not the best combo!lol✨ Thank you for your invested teaching, your time, it upmost inspired my first commissioned work as part of The Place Prize. ✨ Thank you for leading by example, showing that being kind, playful, and caring is as vital as the art we make. ✨ Thank you for sharing your incredible knowledge, always ‘rooted’ in our shared humanity. ✨ Thank you for shared fan love/stress supporting Liverpool FC! Yep, feels like the “return beat” in current form on the pitch.lol✨ Thank you for us never needing to debate the Jollof issue because we eat them all 🇸🇳🇳🇬🇬🇭 Olu-Your intellect, wisdom, and laughter will continue to move through us all. 🙏🏿💜

Well this is a blast from the past
Yuva tour 1993 of Spirited Youth and In the Mix.
I remember the residency in Leeds..the amazing time with my fellow dancers...and also when I received the phone call for my A level results (were not the best 😅😅)...but it's also when I met and heard @nitinsawhney for the first time playing flamenco guitar!
