YARN FOR GOOD. 🐑 We are a MI regenerative family farm supporting US farms with our living wage supply chain of PLANT DYED YARNS 🧶 SHOP ONLINE - no DMs
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
There’s a lot that happens before yarn makes its way into your project bag. 🐑✨

As we count down to Flock, we’ve been inviting vendors to answer a variety of fun prompts and share a little more about their work, processes, personalities, and behind-the-scenes moments. So when we prompted for our “From Farm to Skein” highlight asking vendors to give us a peek into owning a farm and working directly with the animals, @mitchellwoolco gave us this response 👆 (and lots of very cute animal photos).

What started as a family’s desire to support American wool has grown into a farm-centered yarn company dedicated to connecting makers with the people, animals, and land behind every skein. Based in Michigan, Mitchell Wool Co. raises sheep on their family farm and works closely with other family farms that share their values around animal welfare, regenerative agriculture, and building a sustainable American wool industry.

Mitchell Wool Co. believes knowing where your fiber comes from matters, and they work to create yarn that tells the full story, from the sheep in the pasture to the finished skein in your hands. Their wool is processed through American mills and many of their colorways are naturally dyed using plants.

To them, the sheep aren’t just livestock. They’re family. (Or as Mitchell Wool Co. likes to call them, their “farmily.”) That care and intention show up in every part of what they do!

If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about where your yarn comes from, or meet the people helping keep American wool production alive and thriving, be sure to stop by their booth at Flock.

Stick around! We’ll be sharing more vendor highlights to help highlight what makes this community so special. Keep an eye out for more in the weeks ahead! 💛

Let's take a closer look at Currents! 🍂

One of my favorite things about this sweater? No two have to look alike or will look alike. Currents is a top-down, circular-yoke pullover with playful stripes of color-changing yarn scattered throughout. You decide where those little pops of color appear!

But there's more to this sweater than pretty stripes.
✨ Relaxed fit with 4–8" of positive ease
✨ Customizable upper-arm fit and optional bust darts
✨ Easy bracelet-length sleeves with instructions for other options
✨ 12 sizes, with finished bust measurements from 33.5–80"

And those stripes? That's where you get to have some fun. A little color, a lot of color, or something unexpected. There are instructions to make the sweater just as the samples or guidelines to make your own style.

Your yarn. Your fit. Your Currents. ❤️

AND if you're in NY this weekend and at @awoolenaffair be sure to visit @mitchellwoolco in Booth 1! The fabulous team will totally help you find the PERFECT yarn for your OWN Currents!

Remember…Save 20% with code SWEATERWEATHER throughout October. (link in bio)

Okay... so we broke the rules.

If you know anything about Mitchell Wool, you know we don't mind coloring outside the lines every now and then—especially when it comes to knitting. After all... don't put us in a gauge box! 😉

This week's Get Your Stitch On feature is Boardwalk by Heidi Kirrmaier.

While the pattern is written for fingering weight yarn, we simply couldn't resist casting it on in our Farm Friends DK. We sized down two sizes, used a US 6 needle, and ended up with the relaxed, oversized fit we were dreaming of.

Patterns are wonderful starting points, but don't be afraid to play with gauge, swatch a little, and do a bit of knitting math to make a project your own. Some of our favorite garments have come from breaking the "rules."

Need a little help with the numbers? Send Jessica a message—she's always happy to help you crunch the gauge math and get you knitting with confidence.

Because sometimes the best projects begin with, "What if we tried it this way?" by @mitchellwoolco

Start your morning with a bit of calm from our farm. Pour a cuppa, spend 30 extra seconds centering your soul. Think about a life spent loving on our flock. Mostly it's terrific, it's sometimes hard, but we can do hard things. So can Ewe darlings!

Our Indigo comes from... ewe guessed it, Indigo!

Specifically Indigofera tinctoria.

Key Plant CharacteristicsHeight & Spread: Grows 2 to 3 feet (and up to 4 feet) tall in a shrub like orientation.
Native Range: Native to parts of tropical Africa and tropical Asia / the Indian subcontinent.
It will grow locally as well!

Indigo is a tricky wicket! Cindy isn't one to swear but if she did, it would be over Indigo pots! They're a lot like sourdough & kombucha, a living organism that pretty much does what it wants. She's perfected her process quite well and nine times out of ten it's a great success! Cindy studied in Oaxaca MX with her dye guru Demetrio and this burst open the doors on Indigo production, perfecting a method to minimize the crocking effect.

Crocking is when a plant leaves behind additional dye on the yarn fibers, it comes off with friction. Not releasing much in the rinse water, but with the action of the yarn pulling across your fingers. So you might get blue hands with this one, how much so depends on the pH of you skin, or if you're wearing hand lotion. Not a big deal, just wash it off. It might color your needles though, so best to use metal with this color.

We use indigo in both our Indigo and Sky blue hues. by @mitchellwoolco

AVAILABLE AT A WOOLEN AFFAIR OCTOBER 15-16 -

ONLINE STARTING OCT. 26TH

Our made on Farm wood & leather Cable Corral keeps your interchangeable cables under wraps and stops tangled mingling inside your project bags.

We love good fences, they keep the flock safe & the horses off the road. Despite what Lola our donkey says, a safe animal is one who has a protective corral.

Same for those darn cables that love to dance about all tangled up, and who even knows what size that one is?!?

This plagues the knitters in our group so much that Sherry & Jessica have been noodling this one for months. We've landed on this effective design that minds those pesky cables.

Made here on the Mitchell Wool Farm using hardwood, leather, & brass hardware.

Note- you can see them on the website, but they will not be available until their debut at @awoolenaffair on Thursday October 15th - Come get yours and all the other sustainably made products we sell in BOOTH NUMBER ONE by @mitchellwoolco

This week's featured story traces the growing movement around breed-specific wool, from the sheep and their shepherds to the small mills, craftspeople, and local yarn shops working to rebuild regional fiber economies from the ground up.

We hope you'll enjoy reading "Rare Sheep, Rich Yarns," written by Erika Zambello. Now available for all of our readers to enjoy—free of charge: https://bit.ly/4hHjZQM

There’s gratitude in paring back. If that thing you were chasing lost its luster, that’s ok. It’s never too late to go another way. -Also, if you could unlatch that gate, I got neighbors to see 😉 by @mitchellwoolco
