We met by chance, but created by intention.

At a show, we didn’t know each other, but through a simple conversation, we uncovered a shared passion for art, movement, and storytelling.

That spark led us to create something together. After weeks of exchange, ideas, and inspiration, we found ourselves diving into the roots of Bharatanatyam and the untold story of the Devadasi.

I didn’t know much about this history before. But through these two siblings @mithuxjanu , their deep love for this form, and their willingness to open up, I learned. And I felt it. The dedication. The beauty. The complexity.

We had the urge to translate that experience into images raw, layered, and free from expectations.

No rigid concept. Just trust, curiosity, and a shared space to explore.

These frames are a small part of what we captured that day.

Grateful for the fire, the flow, and the freedom.

World of Dance - Los Angeles 🇺🇸
What a journey… where do we even begin?🥹

Standing on that stage, sharing our true selves and proudly honoring our roots and making our ppl proud was a lifelong dream — one that words can barely capture.

As beautiful as the day was, the real magic was in everything that led up to it: the countless rehearsals, late-night calls, planning chaos, highs and lows, tears, sweat, and unstoppable laughter.

From planning with our sister @jkredu to performing on the World of Dance stage with our girls. Friendship was the foundation of our teamwork.
Before hitting the stage, we said one thing to each other:
“We wouldn’t want to share this stage with anyone else but you.”
@jkredu @rashmii_n @archu_ @__sadaah @s.miyaa 🤍

Thank you to every soul who was part of this journey — with your craft, your talent, your financial support, your motivation, your strength, your blessings and your love.
Thank you, universe, for this opportunity.

Forever grateful. ✨

⚜️Lord Shiva in Motion⚜️

Behold the cosmic dancer — Lord Shiva, crowned with the sacred river goddess Ganga flowing from his matted locks, the soft crescent moon resting gently upon his brow. Beside him stands Parvati, his eternal consort, the quiet force of Shakti

With every step, he dances the timeless rhythm of creation and destruction — a divine symphony of power and grace.

Lord Shiva in Motion

In this dance, time melts.

Inspired by the Ananda Tandava – the cosmic dance of Shiva – the dancer moves through light and shadow, echoing the divine rhythm of creation, preservation, and transformation.

Red and blue merge like fire and water, the pulse of the universe captured in motion blur.

Each step, each gesture becomes a prayer, a vibration — a tribute to the force that binds the cosmos.

Closing our series: More than words can say

With these final images, we offer a respectful closing—fully aware that we’ve only scratched the surface of a deeply rooted, complex, and silenced history.

The story of the Devadasis is not linear. It is layered—with contradictions, pain, dignity, art, exploitation, and resilience. We recognize this is a multifaceted topic, and it’s impossible to do justice to every perspective. That’s just how history works. Our primary task was to bring a suppressed narrative to the surface—so you can now delve deeper and connect the dots for yourself.

This series could only share a small part. So much remains untold. Questions of caste, colonialism, temple politics, Brahminisation, and the Western gaze on Bharatanatyam reach far beyond the scope of a Reel or a post. But that’s exactly why it felt necessary to begin somewhere.

These images reflect how memory endures—through body, through dance, through visual poetry. They are an invitation: to question, to learn, and to keep the story alive.

Thank you for walking this journey with us.

𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝑻𝒘𝒐: The Renaissance of Sadir Attam: From Sadir Attam to Bharatanatyam

During British colonial rule in India, Bharatanatyam, saw a decline due to social stigmatization and the elimination of the Devadasi system.

However, in the 20th century, Bharatanatyam saw a revival thanks to pioneers like T. Balasaraswathi or Rukmini Devi Arundale, who redefined it as a "respected" and structured art form, bringing it to mainstream stage performances while maintaining its spiritual and artistic essence. Nevertheless, we must not forget the contributions of the Devadasis, because without them, there would be no Baratanatyam today.

"For generations, women of our community carried this dance in their bodies and souls. To erase their contributions is to erase Bharatanatyam itself." - T. Balasaraswathi

Shadows of Silence: The Forgotten Devadasis

Veiled in devotion, erased by history.

Once revered as the custodians of sacred art, the Devadasis embodied grace, storytelling, and divine service. But over time, society distorted their purpose, turning devotion into despair.

These images speak of voices long suppressed, of women hidden behind layers of tradition, forced into the shadows.

Can we still hear their echoes? What happened to their sacred art?
