We’d like to celebrate our 10,000th follower with a picture of the woman who started it all. Lucia Montaño Rodriguez, here with her young children and then husband Vicente, never knew the impact she would have on the world with her recipe for tacos dorados. This hard working woman from Tepatitlan, Jalisco opened a lunch counter to feed her family in 1937 and if she were here today she would invite you all into her kitchen!

Happy International Women’s Day! We celebrate today, and always, our matriarch, Lucia Montaño Rodriguez. To know her story is to know sacrifice, loss, and pain. Even more so, it is to know love, support, strength, and courage. We honor a woman who never knew the impact her journey to San Bernardino, CA from Tepatitlan, Jalisco would have on the world.

We have experienced a profound loss as a family and community at Mitla Cafe. This week, Henry “Kingfish” Lopez entered into eternal rest, leaving an empty spot at the table in our hearts which will not be filled. Henry was the grandson of our founders, and son to Vera and Henry, Sr.

Like many in our family, Henry worked at Mitla Cafe in his youth and in his life could be found frequently in our dining room or at the front counter with his own family. When you were lucky enough to catch him you’d not only assuredly get to smile, you would get to laugh. Henry’s sense of humor made others gravitate to him even if you couldn’t tell his joke of the day at work!

There are many ways Henry will be remembered; friend, son, brother husband, uncle, father, grandfather, coach, mentor, Pacific Pirate, Raider, pilgrim, disciple, nino, and countless other titles he left imprinted on our hearts. He was always ready to get up and dance with his wife, Patty. So we remember him in song and celebrate their 41-years of marriage and the times we got to share a dance floor with them.

Our prayers and love are with his immediate family. While, Henry will not be with us in body, his love and the lessons he left us with will never fade. Not a day will pass when you are not on our minds. We miss you, Kingfish! taken in Mitla Cafe by @mitla_cafe
