HISTORY OF SAN BERNARDINO
PART 3 OF 5 🌮🍔🛣️

Route 66 didn’t just run through San Bernardino. It helped turn the city into a booming destination and put San Bernardino right in the middle of American fast-food history.

In 1937, Mitla Cafe opened along Route 66 and became known for its Mexican food and hard-shell tacos.

Across the street, Glen Bell opened a hamburger and hot dog stand. Fascinated by the popularity of Mitla’s tacos, Bell learned how they were made, eventually started selling his own version, and later founded Taco Bell.

Then there’s McDonald’s.

In 1940, Dick and Mac McDonald opened their first restaurant at 14th and E Street in San Bernardino. By 1948, they had introduced their revolutionary Speedee Service System and 15-cent hamburgers, helping create the blueprint for modern fast food.

Route 66. Mitla Cafe. Taco Bell. McDonald’s.

All part of San Bernardino history.

And while all of this was happening, another massive economic engine was growing nearby: Norton Air Force Base.

That brings us to San Bernardino’s golden era in Part 4.
