The funded artist — does that creature exist?

My dearest reader, I’ve been asking myself and other people that question, and for many years I was convinced that such a dream is only possible for a very small group of privileged artists, and definitely impossible for someone like me.

I started my artistic path around 10 years ago, and since then, I keep meeting real human artists who manage to find funding and keep developing their art practice. It is not an easy road; it’s wildly precarious, but it’s possible.

For this zine, I interviewed two of them: Mitsitron, a sound artist, musician and curator; and Hannes, a Vienna-based video artist and experimental musician whose work explores the relationship between individuals, modern societal structures, and technology. I put together my research and their advice here and hope it will be useful for others like us.

‘The Funded Artist’ zine is now available in my web shop:
13 EUR; 22 pages; 7 chapters collecting years of experience; 1 short list with funds in Europe; and a few more words about how it was made.

Comment FLOWERS if you want me to send you the link as a DM.

Otherwise, get it from the link in my bio.
Let’s grow some flowers 🌼

Super happy to perform at @range_festival kassel tomorrow, alongside other amazing artists!!

More info here:
https://range-festival.de/de/2026/10/01/mitsitron/

and some words for what i am working on:
Lament for the weird is a performance for mourning in public. A space for processing the destruction caused by normativity. This lament is Mitsitron's effort to reconnect with sonic traditions of their roots that they first understood as vulgar through their flat modernised schooling. Their music lovingly glitches “greekness” which as every national formation excludes queers and ethinically others. The lament for the weird is everchanging: it is as a collage of a live processed electric guitar, expanded vocals, the Plug Data visual coding system and greek modes that touch the heart of those exiled from them. by @mitsitron

“Dutch waves are kept on a leash
at a safe distance from people’s living rooms
on the other side of a gigantic dune
dike
wall.
The North Sea is cold grey storms
hysterical tides
future
or ancient
catastrophic floods.
It’s hard to feel love here
to feel the
liquid
chain of cellular life
that connects me to the first bacterium
more recently,
to my mother
who was my first warm sea
—the Palace of the Child
they call it in Vietnam
before revealing herself as warm flesh
when the nurses smacked fluid out of my lungs
wiped the blood off my face
and I knew for the first time non-aquatic being.”

from Blue Womb, one of the 21 pieces (including the song we improvised using the texts written by audience members while they ate the swamp-in-a-bowl that was lovingly created by Sarah Blake AKA Swamp) that composed the two-hour performance Waterwake, written and performed by Valentina Vella in confluence with co-performers and co-creators Luke {LISA} Deane, Mitsitron, and Stephen Kerr. Sound by Vincent Denieul, lighting by Maurice Specht. Photos by @matteomontaldo

𝗢𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟮, 𝗠𝗮𝗠𝗔 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸. 💧

Grief can change the way you move through the world. It can live in the body, return unexpectedly or reshape the way you relate to others.

What follows the heartbreak creates space for the messy, painful and transformative experiences that can emerge through loss, rupture and change. Through video, photography, installation and painting, the artists in this exhibition approach grief not as something to solve, but as something to experience together.

The works move between lost family ties, queer joy, memory, resilience and political realities. They ask: what does the body remember? And how do we listen to it?

Join us for the opening on May 22, from 6-9 PM! ✨

You are invited to WATERWAKE at Buitenplaats Brienenoord, this Sunday the 19th of April at 6pm!

The evening consists of a water-themed dinner by SWAMP (a swamp in a bowl!) a new performance about water that contains storytelling, music, and songs co-created with Luke {LISA} Deane, Stephen Kerr, Mitsitron, and you (we will improvise a song based on audience input) and lastly we will have a watery DJ set by Vincent Denieul as DJ Boshoer.

The festivities start at 6pm and go on until they kick us out of the island! Ticket link in bio (it’s important to get it now, so SWAMP can make enough food for everyone!)

Supported by CBK Rotterdam (Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam) @cbkrotterdam

If you want you can even come spend the whole day on the island, the donation-based Buitenplaats café is open on weekends and the island is a delightful place.

More info about the performance: How does our attitude to water affect the way we love, fear, and relate to each other? And what do the Tikkie app and the Oosterscheldekering have in common? Through voice, electronics, modular synths, guitar, and piano, WATERWAKE moves through improvised songs, sound pieces, and personal stories that circle infrastructures of water and feeling.

The workshop is facilitated by Varia members Danny Tirthdas Van Der Kleij and Mitsitron with the support of SocTalk.

Date: Saturday, 4 April 2026
Time: 11:00 - 14:00 CET

🔥🔥🔥 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗠𝗔 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 🔥🔥🔥

𝙒𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙍𝙪𝙗𝙮 𝙍𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙈𝙞𝙩𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙚𝙞𝙡.

This year, our ever-changing showroom will transform to explore the invisible history of shadow geologies, soft whispers from the dark, ghost workers on palm oil fields, and invasive species caught on ships.

Then it will change into a monument for grief, a loud chorus of disappointment rooted in a reality that feels impossible to imagine a bright future for.

We will end the program year with a showroom filled with plants and food, like the connective tissue that binds family members and traditions together.

Since 2019, MaMA invites a group of emerging cultural workers to take on the role of program maker as part of our learning and working talent development trajectory. Working closely with MaMA’s team, the program makers develop an exhibition and accompanying public program from the first idea to the final realization in the showroom.

Peer-to-peer learning is at the core of the trajectory. Program makers work both collectively and individually, transforming a personal and/or socially urgent theme into an exhibition that speaks to a wider public. Rather than being expected to do everything alone, the trajectory centers collaboration, reflection, and shared responsibility.

We’re excited to share their projects with you throughout 2026! ✨
Starting with Ruby Reding’s exhibition, opening February 27.

Click for link in bio to learn more about Ruby, Mitsitron and Sean. A Dutch-language version is available on our website as well.
