This week’s Iceberg is about homecoming and the ways in which some of us mythologize our life as I pack my bags to return to Madison for @brianbartels x @jessfrain16’s wedding💞

It’s been over a decade since I’ve been back, so there are some big feelings beyond my friend’s even bigger day. I frame it in a story about how hospitality works when the giver and receiver of it opt in conscientiously over the years. And what’s at stake when they can’t or don’t.

Every time I return, the memories flood back. Like Brian, Steve and I behind the bar at Paul’s Club with baseball jerseys on.. because it’s baseball season and some probably wonder if we ever had hair (on top of our head)?

And yes, that is a can of Red Bull- which was launched in the US a few year before this photo was taken - on the counter 🤦🏻‍♂️

@marionnestle traveled from her home in New York to be present in Portland to share her new book Sugar Coated, co-authored by Lisa Sutherland at @vivienneculinarybooks tonight.

@culinarybreedingnetwork had the honor of hosting a q&a before a signing, which Nestle handled with a preternatural ease I’ve rarely witnessed in a setting like this. The author responded to every one of Lane’s questions fulsome and playfully, as if she was alternating between reading from her book and carrying on a stand up comedy skit. Academic books like Food Politics, Sugar Coated or What To Eat are chock full of facts. Nestle was able to parry them around tonight like her photographic memory had a Leica lens.

The only thing more impressive than her legacy as a scientist and food writer (Nestle began her career-check out her Wikipedia page 🤯- in nutrition in 1975 as a college professor at Brandeis University) for me was Nestle herself. At 90 years young, she effortlessly held the room with grace, levity and good cheer after 10 pm EST on a national tour for her 18th book.

There’s always a cocktail angle, so I wrote about the Don’t Give Up the Ship cocktail in the context of PPS’s proposal to rapidly close up to fourteen schools (including my son’s) without input from teachers, families and the data to demonstrate it’s the right decision for our city. Stopped by @multnomahwhiskeylibrary to pick up a copy of @your.daily.brett and @jacobgrier’s beautiful new book The Bartender’s Library, which comes out on October 13th. Their ornately bound bartender’s bible is nearly 400 pages of serious spirits writing with a handful of gorgeously photographed cocktails in each chapter. Congrats and thanks Brett 🥃 by @mixography

My friend @juliewolfson sent me this photo of @bartenderpantry propped up in front of @agodragos and next to @chefcortneyburns at @heathceramics in Los Angeles.

The second photo shot by @ajmeeker is of a pitcher I bought at Heath in San Francisco and four cups @tungchiang made for me to match the glaze on the pitcher for the shot (my Gut Punch with @arielle_johnson’s kombucha). Having our book sold amongst his beautiful ceramics is a dream come true for me… what an honor 🫶🏻 taken in Heath Ceramics by @mixography

My first trip up to Cornwall on Hudson to take Gary Regan’s Cocktails in the Country course with my girlfriend Valerie Simi (that worked out pretty well 😜) back in 2006. Gaz was so generous and kind to us… and we were so thrilled to spend the time with him. He signed my copy of the Joy of Mixology to both of us. Happy birthday Gaz.. we miss you 🫶🏻 by @mixography

Thanks to @craightonberman for scooping me minutes after I arrived to make it to The Land School in time to listen to a few tracks on their @devonojas designed sound system before enjoying an @intlanthem production of @jeremiahchiu and @mmartassofia in concert with with a stirring string section and drums. It was a real treat to reconnect with @like_pippen and meet @theastergates… I love Chicago 💙 by @mixography
