📣 LAUNCHING MALDIVES SHARK HUB

After months of building, testing, and refining, we’re beyond excited to share that our new national community platform for shark observations and citizen science is live! 🦈✨

Designed to bring together the entire ocean community, this app lets you log shark sightings, submit photo-ID, and directly contribute to monitoring our apex predators across the Maldives. Whether you’re a dive guide with a favorite spot, a visitor on a liveaboard, a resort biologist, a fisher out in the blue, or a community member walking along the beach - this is for everyone!

You can also report ecologically important events, from mating observations to fishing interactions and other incidents. No previous experience is needed - every shark sighting adds to the bigger picture.

We’ll be rolling out even more features over the coming month - so stay tuned!

📸 And the best part? If you’d like to submit sightings regularly, you can create your own personal account and be part of the network.

🤝 A huge thank you to @natgeo for supporting the development of this platform!

2025 in review 🦈✨
What a year it’s been! Here’s a small highlight reel of what we’ve been busy with - mostly in the water and on boats, often in classrooms and occasionally remembering to post about it. While it’s been a little quiet here, the work very much hasn’t been.
We’re so grateful to our team, collaborators, communities, and supporters for every dive, data point, and shared commitment. With new projects launching in 2026, we’re immensely excited to share more very soon.
If you’d like to dive deeper into our work from 2025, our next annual report will be out shortly 😉

Have you tried out the Maldives Shark Hub yet? 🤓

The Maldives Shark Hub is a national platform for collecting shark sightings and photo-identification data from across the Maldives.

If you see a shark—while diving, fishing, or out on the water—you can submit your sighting from anywhere in the country. Each record is stored in your personal dashboard, allowing you to build a history of your own observations over time - and share with friends and guests! ⭐️

These contributions are more than individual sightings. When combined, they help researchers track shark presence across different atolls, identify important habitats, and monitor human impacts over time.

Some creatures define the ocean; the bowmouth guitarfish defies it. A prehistoric design that feels almost alien in its perfection. While the rest of the world rushes forward, these ancient travelers glide along the seabed as if they have all the time in the world.

Scenes from the Maldives 🌊 A collection of colour, current and coconuts. Many come for the beaches, I come for the whole ocean. When I travel the Maldives, I love taking the opportunity to stay on local islands. Things can be a little less polished, but I love that the beauty of the natural world takes centre stage 🌸🐚🐟

A few moments from our daily life at the Maldives Shark Research and Conservation Centre. 🦈

This past month, we’ve welcomed countless visitors from across the Maldives (and the world), held film screenings, worked on building new equipment in the lab, and watched our research team grow. Some of our youngest visitors have even become regulars, dropping by to read books, and learn about sharks almost every day.

With our doors open every day from 9–5, it’s been great to see the Centre truly become a place where people from all ages come together to dive deeper into our work and the sharks of the Maldives. 🙌🏾

🚨 Guitarfish Milestone Alert 🚨

Together we have now identified 100 individual Madi Miyaru🦈 Madi Miyaru means “ray-shark” in Dhivehi - and it fits them much better than their English name “Bottlenose Wedgefish” 😉

The Maldives is one of its last remaining safe havens in the Indian Ocean for this Critically Endangered Species..

Each Madi Miyaru has a unique pattern of spots, allowing us to recognise individuals from photographs and videos. Every sighting helps us learn where they live, reproduce and how human activities, including land reclamation, may affect their future.

To everyone who has shared a photo or helped us search for Madi Miyaru: thank you - this truly is a collective effort.

Have you seen one? Submit your photos through the Maldives Shark Hub. If it’s a new individual, you’ll get to name it and receive a certificate!

Interested in partnering with us to expand this project? Drop us a message at guitarfish@miyaru.org!
