THIS IS IT: THE ARCHIVE. After a lot of waiting, planning, and working behind the scenes, I’m officially introducing a new MJJVaults series dedicated to preserving the visual history of Michael Jackson’s This Is It era. Rehearsals. Movie material. Behind-the-scenes footage. News reports. Extras. Interviews. Production material. Basically, everything surrounding This Is It that deserves to be preserved and documented. The series has officially started uploading to YouTube, with the movie extras currently being added. The first video, “Making Smooth Criminal,” is up NOW through my story. Rehearsal footage is planned to begin arriving around mid to late October. I know I said a documentary or a book. This isn’t exactly that, but I think this is the next best thing. Rather than putting everything into one massive project, I want to build something that can continue growing over time. The plan is to upload once or twice a week, with at least one video every week, but there won’t be a specific upload day. Every video will be processed through HandBrake to ensure the best possible quality, and every thumbnail will be made to the highest standard I can achieve. I may also work on audio restoration/remastering for certain releases. I’ve already experimented with some Dolby Atmos renders of songs from the project, and depending on the material, some of those may eventually accompany the videos. And who knows... if this grows into something bigger, THIS IS IT: THE ARCHIVE could potentially become its own website someday. For now, though, this is simply about preserving the footage, documenting the era, and giving these pieces of Michael’s final project the presentation they deserve. A true MJJVaults production. For the King. #thisisit #michaeljackson #mj #kingofpop #mjjvaults #explorepage #viral #trending #trendingposts #fyp #billiejean #smoothcriminal by @mjjvaults
November 3, 1996 | Shopping in Bangkok | Bangkok, Thailand On this day in 1996, Michael Jackson spent part of his stay in Bangkok, Thailand, shopping with members of his entourage during the Asian leg of the HIStory World Tour. Michael had arrived in Bangkok on November 2, following his November 1 performance in Mumbai, India. Accompanied by the Cascio family, he was staying at the Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao as preparations continued for his upcoming concert. One of his stops was Tower Records in Siam Square, where he browsed the store. His appearance attracted considerable attention, with fans gathering around the location hoping to catch a glimpse of him. Thai fan Wirintip Siriratanaanan, who later spoke to Khaosod English about Michael's 1996 visit, recalled following his movements around Bangkok. She remembered waiting outside locations he visited, including the hotel and Tower Records, before eventually meeting him during his charitable visits the following day. The shopping trip came just two days before Michael's scheduled November 5 performance at Muang Thong Thani City Center. It was his second visit to Thailand, following the two Dangerous World Tour concerts he performed in August 1993. The Bangkok visit also included several charitable activities. On November 4, Michael visited an orphanage and a school for blind children, distributing toys and making a reported $100,000 donation to the orphanage. Although relatively ordinary compared with his stadium performances, these candid appearances offered Thai fans a rare opportunity to see Michael away from the stage during the HIStory era. #michaeljackson #mj #kingofpop #mjj #mjjvaults #historyworldtour #historyera #bangkok #thailand #towerrecords #siamsquare #mj1996 #michaeljacksonhistory #mjhistory #explorepage #viral #trending #fyp #foryoupage #viralreels by @mjjvaults
On this day in 1996, Michael Jackson spent part of his time in Bangkok, Thailand, shopping with members of the Cascio family during the Asian leg of the HIStory World Tour. Having arrived in Bangkok on November 2 following his performances in Mumbai, India, Michael was preparing for his upcoming November 5 concert at the Muang Thong Thani stadium. The visit marked his return to Thailand, where he had previously performed during the Dangerous World Tour in August 1993. On November 3, Michael and the Cascios visited a shopping mall in Bangkok. Despite attempting to enjoy a relatively ordinary afternoon, his presence attracted attention from local fans and photographers. His movements around the city were closely followed throughout his stay. The shopping trip was part of a busy visit that included several public appearances and charitable activities. The following day, November 4, Michael visited an orphanage and a school for blind children, distributing toys and reportedly donating $100,000 to the orphanage. His time in Thailand culminated on November 5 with a HIStory World Tour performance at Muang Thong Thani. It would be his final concert appearance in the country. Although November 3 was not a concert day, photographs and recollections from Michael's Bangkok visit preserve another glimpse of his travels during the 1996 tour, when even an afternoon of shopping could attract enormous attention. November 3, 1995 | Arrival in Germany and Wetten, dass..? Rehearsals | Cologne and Duisburg, Germany On this day in 1995, Michael Jackson arrived at Cologne/Bonn Airport in Germany ahead of his highly anticipated appearance on the German television programme “Wetten, dass..?” His arrival attracted approximately 400 fans at the airport, many of whom had been transported there by Sony Music. Wearing a white face mask and black hat, Michael greeted the waiting crowd and reportedly tossed white roses toward fans before entering his waiting limousine. He was accompanied by members of his personal entourage, including stylists, assistants, security personnel, and his own chef. His wife, Lisa Marie Presley, did not accompany him on the trip. Michael spent approximately three hours rehearsing for the broadcast, working on two performances: “Dangerous” and “Earth Song.” The latter would receive its first televised performance, making the appearance particularly significant in the promotion of his HIStory album. The following evening, November 4, Michael would perform both songs before an audience of approximately 1,500 people inside the venue, with an estimated 24 million television viewers watching across Europe. His appearance marked his first performance on European television and introduced the HIStory era's spectacular live presentation to a major European television audience. The November 3 rehearsals were an important part of the preparation for one of Michael's most memorable television appearances of the 1990s. Also, I don't know why in the hell this footage is so pink. I attempted to remove some of the pink in DaVinci Resolve, but that did more harm than good - so OG file it is. #michaeljackson #mj #kingofpop #mjj #mjjvaults #historyera #historyalbum #wettendass #dangerous #earthsong #duisburg #cologne #germany #mj1995 #michaeljacksonhistory #mjhistory #explorepage #viral #trending #fyp #foryoupage #viralreels by @mjjvaults
On this day in 1995, Michael Jackson arrived in Cologne, Germany, ahead of his highly anticipated appearance on the German television program Wetten, dass..?, one of Europe's most-watched Saturday evening entertainment shows. On November 3, Michael landed at Cologne/Bonn Airport aboard a private jet, accompanied by members of his management and security team. Hundreds of fans had gathered to welcome him, despite the cold weather. As he departed the airport, Michael acknowledged the crowd from his limousine, waving and throwing white roses to the waiting fans. His arrival marked the beginning of preparations for a major European television appearance. Later that day, Michael traveled to the Rhein-Ruhr-Halle in Duisburg, where he rehearsed his upcoming performances. The journey was complicated by heavy traffic on the A3 motorway, but he eventually reached the venue. Michael spent approximately three hours rehearsing, including his performance of "Dangerous," before returning to Cologne for the evening. His appearance was scheduled for November 4, alongside a second performance that would introduce "Earth Song" to television audiences. The following evening, Michael performed both songs on Wetten, dass..? in what became his first appearance on a European television entertainment program. The broadcast attracted an enormous audience, with international industry publication Music & Media subsequently reporting that more than 24 million people tuned in. The November 3 preparations were an important part of a television event that brought Michael back to European audiences during the HIStory era, showcasing both his established choreography and new material from his latest album. What do you think about Michael's 1995 Wetten, dass..? performances? Let me know in the comments. On this day in 1987, Michael Jackson was spotted in Hong Kong during an extended break from the Bad World Tour, spending several weeks exploring the city away from the stadium crowds and international concert schedule. Michael had arrived in Hong Kong on October 21, traveling privately from Japan aboard a private jet. His arrival was accompanied by an elaborate attempt to avoid the press, involving entertainer and magician Dr. Penguin and Canadian singer Peggy Johnson, who dressed as Michael to distract photographers waiting at Kai Tak Airport. During his stay, Michael visited several of Hong Kong's attractions, including Ocean Park, where he enjoyed rides and spent time with his companions. He also explored traditional streets, visited local establishments, and developed an interest in the city's culture and surroundings. The trip was particularly significant because Michael was between the Japanese and Australian legs of the Bad World Tour. Rather than immediately continuing his demanding concert schedule, he spent approximately three weeks in Hong Kong, eventually making a private one-day visit to mainland China on October 23. Michael's stay also included filming and photography activities at the famous Shaw Brothers Studio, where he participated in a costume photoshoot on November 4. He eventually departed Hong Kong on November 10, 1987, traveling to Sydney, Australia, to continue the Bad World Tour. His visit remains his only documented trip to Hong Kong, making it a fascinating and relatively unusual chapter of his international travels. What do you think about Michael's 1987 visit to Hong Kong? Let me know in the comments. MIAMI, USA | Victory Tour This photo captures Michael Jackson performing with his brothers at the Miami Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, on November 3, 1984, during The Jacksons’ Victory Tour. This was the second and final Miami concert, following the opening performance on November 2. The Miami stop was one of the biggest engagements of the entire tour. The two concerts attracted a combined audience of approximately 120,000 people, according to figures published by Billboard. The November 2 performance alone drew a reported 62,000 fans, making it the largest single-night crowd recorded for the Victory Tour in some historical compilations. There was also an unusual political story surrounding the Miami concerts. The city was dealing with controversy over the firing of its city manager, and some local voices called for the Jacksons to cancel their performances in protest. Instead, the concerts went ahead, and the mayor and city manager were reportedly invited to attend together. The show opened with the dramatic “Sword in the Stone” introduction before Michael and his brothers launched into “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.” The set continued with “Things I Do for You,” “Off the Wall,” and “Human Nature,” which featured a short introduction from Michael’s earlier hit “Ben.” Other highlights included “This Place Hotel,” “She’s Out of My Life,” Jermaine Jackson’s solo medley, and the Jackson 5 classics “I Want You Back,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.” Michael then performed “Rock with You,” “Lovely One,” and “Workin’ Day and Night.” The closing section featured “Beat It” and “Billie Jean,” before the brothers returned for “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground),” incorporating a snippet of “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough.” If you liked this photo, follow @mjjvaults for more Michael Jackson history, rare content, and daily posts. #michaeljackson #mj #kingofpop #mjjvaults #victorytour #thejacksons #michaeljacksonhistory #mjhistory #miami #florida #1984 #mjlegacy #mjfans #concerthistory #musiclegends by @mjjvaults
On this day in 1984, Michael Jackson visited the home of Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb while in Miami, Florida, for the Jacksons' Victory Tour. On November 3, Michael took a break from the demanding concert schedule to spend time with Barry, one of the most successful singer-songwriters of the era. The two musicians had developed a friendship through their shared connections to the music industry, and Michael's visit offered an opportunity to spend time together away from the touring environment. According to accounts of the visit, Michael also went water skiing during his time in Florida, enjoying a recreational afternoon between performances. The timing was particularly interesting. Michael and his brothers were performing two consecutive nights at Miami's Orange Bowl on November 2 and 3. The first concert reportedly attracted approximately 62,000 people, making it one of the largest documented audiences of the entire Victory Tour. The Victory Tour had begun on July 6 in Kansas City and was approaching its final stages, with the Jacksons having already performed across the United States and Canada. Michael would continue touring with his brothers through November before concluding the historic run at Dodger Stadium in December. Although relatively little photographic documentation of the Barry Gibb visit has circulated, it remains an interesting glimpse into Michael's friendships and personal activities during the Victory Tour. AVAILABLE NOW: The “Tom Sneddon Is A Cold Man” T-Shirt, exclusively from MJJVaults! Inspired by one of the most pointed and controversial tracks in Michael Jackson's HIStory catalog, this design brings a memorable reference from “D.S.” to a wearable piece of Michael Jackson merchandise. Released in 1995 on Michael's ninth studio album, HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, “D.S.” is a hard-hitting rock track written and produced by Michael, featuring guitar work from Slash of Guns N' Roses. The song is widely understood to be directed at Thomas W. Sneddon Jr., the former Santa Barbara County District Attorney who led the criminal investigation into Michael following the 1993 allegations. The connection is made through the song's fictional character, Dom Sheldon, whose name and the song's refrain closely reference Sneddon. The track expresses Michael's anger and frustration over the investigation, media scrutiny, and the treatment he felt he had received. Sneddon subsequently returned as the lead prosecutor in Michael's 2005 criminal trial. On June 13, 2005, Michael was found NOT GUILTY on every charge by a jury in Santa Maria, California. Sneddon retired in 2006. Good riddance. The shirt's wording is a playful visual reworking of the song's famous refrain, bringing together the fictional name and the real prosecutor's surname. It's a reference that longtime Michael Jackson fans will immediately recognize, particularly those familiar with the history behind the HIStory album. On this day in 1996, Michael Jackson arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, ahead of his upcoming HIStory World Tour concert, marking his return to the country for the first time since the Dangerous World Tour in 1993. On November 2, Michael arrived in Bangkok accompanied by members of his traveling party, including the Cascio family. His arrival attracted considerable attention, with photographers and fans gathering to catch a glimpse of the superstar. Associated Press photographer Charles Dharapak captured Michael giving a thumbs-up while being escorted through the hotel area, producing one of the most recognizable photographs from the visit. Michael's arrival came just one day after his November 1 performance at Mumbai's Andheri Sports Complex in India. Bangkok was the next stop on the Asian leg of the HIStory World Tour, which had already taken him through Europe and several destinations across Asia. During his stay, Michael also made time for activities away from the concert preparations. On November 3, he visited a shopping mall, and on November 4, he visited children at an orphanage and the Bangkok School for the Blind. Reports of his charitable activities included a donation of $100,000 to the orphanage. His upcoming performance was scheduled for November 5 at Muang Thong Thani, on Bangkok's northern outskirts. It would be his only concert in Thailand during the HIStory World Tour and his final concert appearance in the country. The visit attracted significant attention throughout Thailand, with contemporary reporting describing extensive television and newspaper coverage. For Thai fans, it was another opportunity to see Michael perform live, three years after his first visit during the Dangerous World Tour. What do you think about Michael's 1996 visit to Thailand? On this day in 1991, an unauthorized recording of Michael Jackson's upcoming single, “Black or White,” was leaked to radio stations across the United States, two days before its scheduled official release. On November 2, several radio stations in Los Angeles and New York began playing the unreleased track after receiving unauthorized copies. The song, which would become the lead single from Michael's highly anticipated eighth studio album, Dangerous, was not officially scheduled to reach radio until November 4. The leak created an unusual situation for Michael and his record company, Epic Records, as stations began broadcasting a song that had not yet received its official release. According to the Los Angeles Times, the unauthorized recording was played on KPWR-FM in Los Angeles and its sister station WQHT-FM in New York. There was another unexpected development that same day. An unreleased recording of Michael's older brother Jermaine Jackson's “Word to the Badd!!” also surfaced at several of the same radio stations. The song contained pointed criticism of Michael, and the two recordings were played back-to-back, turning an already unusual release into a major Jackson family news story. Despite the premature airing, “Black or White” officially launched on November 4 and quickly became a worldwide success. Written by Michael Jackson, with additional rap lyrics by Bill Bottrell, the track combined rock, pop, and dance influences with a message of racial harmony. It featured a memorable guitar introduction by Slash. The song would eventually spend seven consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the defining hits of the Dangerous era. What do you think about the unusual circumstances surrounding the release of “Black or White”? Let me know in the comments.
