I always wondered what it would be like to go back in the house I grew up in. I lived there from the time I was born until the start of my sophomore year in high school. I had driven by there several times over the years and once even got a photo of me standing in front of it. But I never knocked on the door or made any attempt to go in. It is not in the greatest neighborhood anymore. Sadly it wasn’t safe to do. The changing neighborhood was the reason my family moved to a suburb, South Holland. So did everyone else nearby - fled to the suburbs or further west in the city. That’s a story for another day. We kept the gas station around the block and I finished high school in the city, and I pretty much forgot about the idea of ever going back into that house.

Then a few weeks ago my brother sent me a Zillow listing. 9926 South Throop Street in Chicago was for sale! Not that I’d ever buy it, but there were several photos of it in its current condition. And frankly it didn’t look too bad. Someone had made some major renovations over the years. But overall it looked very recognizable to me. I could identify every room. It brought back a cavalcade of memories, room by room.

Seven Supple kids grew up in that house. There were three bedrooms and a dining room converted to a bedroom. My two older sisters had one bedroom upstairs and I shared a bedroom with my two little brothers in the other one upstairs. My two younger sisters shared the converted bedroom on the first floor and then there was my parents’ bedroom.

Maybe someday I will tell you more. (I’m limited on how much can be said on Instagram!). In the meantime, step inside this house. The house that built me. SCROLL TO SEE SOME OLD PHOTOS ➡️
