Life at Grandma’s house…

“Nobody tells you when you’re a kid that one random Sunday at Grandma’s house will eventually be the last time everyone is there at the same time.

The cousins are running in and out of the house.

Somebody’s yelling, “STOP SLAMMING THAT DOOR!”

The adults are sitting around the kitchen table talking about things you couldn’t care less about.

There’s food everywhere.

Someone is asleep in a recliner.

You can hear the TV from the other room.

You’re bored half the time and begging to go home.

And you have absolutely no idea that you are standing inside a memory you will spend the rest of your life wishing you could walk back into.

Then everybody grows up.

The cousins move away.

People get married.

Families get busy.

Grandparents get older.

The house gets sold.

Some people stop speaking.

Some people are no longer here.

And suddenly you’d give just about anything to sit at that kitchen table for ten more minutes and hear everybody’s voices coming from different rooms.

The older I get, the more I realize…

We weren’t “just going to Grandma’s house.”

We were going to the one place where our entire family still belonged to each other.

And somehow none of us realized it was temporary.

If you had a house like that growing up, you were richer than you knew. “ 🤍 - courtesy of Kindra Sims…

I lived it. I was lucky.

And the awesome most perfect song to go with it:

“There’s a big white house on a leafy street
On a summer’s day in 1963
A station wagon’s parked in the drive
With dents in the fender and wood on the side
There’s kids and dogs and Instamatic hues
Squinting hard in the sun
Not just yet, but one day too
They’ll be chasing what’s already gone” 🎶 @marychapincarpenter

My dad Charlie Supple ran a Texaco gas station for many years in Chicago but I bet you didn’t know he was a male model. He didn’t either! He became one for Lakemaid Beer long after he died in this classic shot of him on a fishing trip in Kenora, Ontario Canada. Thanks to cousin Jack Supple for recognizing how great this photo was and using it for his beer company. If you have any doubt how handsome he was you can judge for yourself in the rest of the photos.
He was born on this day and died on this day - July 25, when he turned 80 in 2002. Happy heavenly birthday Dad, you’re a legend. 🙌❤️ ⛽️ 🎣 🍻

Short jaunt from our house to see a band like this in a field behind an old creamery? And they start at 6 p.m.? Are those questions? No brainer. The Old 97s at Seven Acres Dairy!

This one week every year ‘Sup North somehow always rises to the top. Is it the lake, the walks on the Bearskin Trail, the Min-Aqua Bats ski show, the campfire songs and stories, the tubing and pontooning, or the shopping downtown Minocqua? I think it’s just all of us being together. We missed Anay, Shane, and Angela this time. Till next year… 🙌❤️🌲🎣🌊 🦌
p.s. And yes the kids did go nightswimming! Last pic. So fun!

“A time you may embrace” 🎶
Saw a legend last night…

You know damn well we all embraced this moment. Seeing Roger McGuinn, one of the founders of the original Byrds play at the great new music venue in Madison, the Atwood Music Hall.

“Hey Mr. Twelve-string guitar man play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I’ll come following you” 🎶 🙌

Happy Birthday to my Dad, who would have been 103 today. He died on his 80th birthday, 23 years ago today.
I miss him a lot, and think about him often. “I learned a thing or two from Charlie, don’t ya know.” ❤️

“What did you miss when the days went missing?
… I’ve been writing it down song by song
As a personal history
Personal history” 🎶 ~ @marychapincarpenter #MaryChapinCarpenter

Going back in time on this throwback Thursday. That’s my mom Rita Claire Koch Supple and my two big sisters, Claire and Mary (in my mom’s arms). Circa early 50’s. Love this photo in my dad’s archives and you know damn well I love that motel sign. Not sure exactly where it was located and maybe someday I will, but I do think it’s in the Wisconsin Dells.

“I will always be your harbor”. - @stephen_kellogg #StephenKellogg

If you say that to someone you know you mean it. And so do they.

My Uncle Jack was a bachelor until late in life. He was my dad‘s business partner at the gas station, Supple Brothers Texaco, in Chicago. One of the coolest things about him is he owned a yacht. He worked his way up from a small ChrisCraft to a real big one, a 56 footer. One of the treats on summer Sundays was a ride on Uncle Jack’s boat. I can’t believe it, but sometimes my dad would let us sit up front on the bow of the boat with our legs dangling over getting splashed by the Lake Michigan waves.
The boat was named BriMar. It was named after my Grandma Bridget Supple and my aunt, my dad and uncles’ one and only sister, Mary. Some of you remember Mary became a nun and was our dear Sister Mary, a Sinsinawa Dominican, who was the kindest person I ever met.
I luckily have my dad‘s photographs, slides, negatives, and movie reels. And there are many photos of BriMar in them. But this first one was the only one that showed the name of the boat on the back. It’s a beaut, isn’t it?
I’m sure my dad Charlie, my Uncles Jack, Jim, Tom, and Frank all considered themselves safe harbors to Bridget and Mary as well as to their aging father John Supple. To me, that means if they needed anything one of them would always be there. How special is it to have a harbor in your life? Thank you SK for this great new song. 🙌🎶

Yes we have a code. A code of love. We teach by doing. We teach by living. Our annual vacation ‘Sup North is a big part of that. Some more fun moments this week so far. ❤️ 🌲 🦌 🎣 🛶

p.s. I woke up the night before this trip with this song in my head. So I had to use it. The best part about it is Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar. 🙌🎶
