Excited to share that I’ve been selected for the @artblocks_io x @opensea Artist Residency! 🙏🔥

I’ll spend 4 weeks in Marfa sketching, brainstorming, and working on a new project in a place that feels so different from my day-to-day. #marfa

I don’t know how the desert will shape the work — but I can’t wait to find out.

Can’t wait!!!!!

Looking forward to 4 weeks of brainstorming, sketching, coding, and seeing how the desert rewires my thinking.

Gift of Time — WIP

Time is the only material we can’t edit, pause, or duplicate.
This piece is built moment by moment, shaped by systems that measure change and transform it into form.

Currently in progress.

Gift of Time is my @artblocks_io × @opensea Marfa Residency piece.

Joining OpenSea’s Flagship Collection...

Gift of Time by @mlarino. A generative system built during the @artblocks_io x OpenSea residency in Marfa, Texas, that has been moving since the moment it began and keeps running whether or not anyone is watching.

Gift of Time was created during the @artblocks_io x OpenSea Artist Residency in Marfa, Texas — a month in the desert with no meetings, no emails, and a single responsibility: to think about art. Manuel arrived expecting the landscape to shape the work. Instead, around the third day, time itself slowed down, and that shift in perception became the piece. The title points in two directions at once: time as a subject and the time given to him by OpenSea, Art Blocks, and his family.

The work treats time as a structural system rather than a theme. Drawing a parallel between the mechanics of a watch and those of a blockchain, it weaves together the many ways humans have tracked time — calendars, the moon, the stars, the sun. It runs on blockchain time, already in motion before you load it and continuing after you leave. Its origin point is fixed: 5:30 PM on June 10th, the moment Manuel photographed the Marfa sign upon his arrival.

The inclusion of Gift of Time 230 in our Flagship Collection honors an experiment in letting a generative system live on its own time — built in the desert, tied to the chain, and left to keep moving whether or not anyone is watching.

Gift of Time - Seasonal tempo:
The hands don’t tick at one speed all year. They breathe with the seasons, speed up at the solstices and equinoxes, and ease back to their regular tempo in between. 🕙

“Gift of Time” opens today at 12:00pm ET
Part of my Artblocks x Opensea artist residency in Marfa, Texas.

During my time in Marfa, time felt slower, longer, and more visible. The work transforms that feeling into a living system of movement, memory, and connection, using blockchain data to synchronize its internal movement to the present, so it does not begin when it is seen, nor stop when it is unseen.

Gift of Time

Last year, in the wide open landscape of Marfa TX, resident artist Manuel Lariño—selected for our Art Blocks x @OpenSea Marfa Residency program—noticed a shift in time.

“In the desert, I felt time move differently. It stretched, slowed, and became something I noticed… Moments felt longer, attention sharpened, and I became increasingly aware of each moment as it passed.”
-@mlarino

Marfa allowed Lariño to direct his newfound awareness into focused creativity, developing a rhythmic generative art system that is driven by time.

In Gift of Time, colorful pulleys and gears harmonize like the internal movement of a jeweled watch.

Behind the scenes, these component parts are controlled by an algorithm built on real, measurable events.

“Different ways of measuring time, such as mechanical cycles, calendars, and lunar phases, are translated into rules that continuously transform the work.”
-@mlarino

Lariño’s thoughtful code is designed for its networked environment: the algorithm is a beneficiary of the blockchain’s uninterrupted movement, keeping time whether we observe it or not.

“It synchronizes with the present moment, but it does not begin when it is viewed; it does not stop when it disappears from the screen.”
-@mlarino

We are appreciative of this enduring work of art, part of the unfolding story of artistic expression in Marfa, TX.

Many thanks to Manuel Lariño for sharing his unique experience with us.

Opening April 30 - 12:00pm ET
on @artblocks_io + @opensea

“Gift of Time” began during my residency in Marfa, Texas, as part of the Art Blocks and OpenSea artist residency program, where a distinct shift in the experience of time became central to the work.

In the desert, I felt time move differently. It stretched, slowed, and became something I noticed. After a few days, the rhythm changed. Moments felt longer, attention sharpened, and I became increasingly aware of each moment as it passed. This work comes from that condition.

Time is not treated only as a theme, but as a system embedded in the structure of the piece. Different ways of measuring time, such as mechanical cycles, calendars, and lunar phases, are translated into rules that continuously transform the work. The piece does not represent time. It runs on it.

Its movement is tied to blockchain time. Even when unseen, it continues to rotate and evolve. When loaded, it synchronizes with the present moment, but it does not begin when it is viewed, and it does not stop when it disappears from the screen.

During the residency, I spent hours thinking, sketching, and making connections. Those connections are also visible. Elastic lines, like rubber bands, link elements across the piece, representing how memories connect, how one thought leads to another, and how everything builds over time. These same connections introduce moments where the system attempts to pull itself back, as if trying to regain control. But it never fully resets. It is not a loop. The movement continues, drifting forward, never returning to a fixed state.

Visually, the work reveals its own construction. Lines, paths, and rotations expose an internal logic, like looking inside a mechanism. The drawing language recalls diagrams, technical sketches, or the interior of a mechanical watch. It is a system in motion, always active.

“Gift of Time” exists because I was given time by Art Blocks, OpenSea, and above all my family. It is my way of saying thank you. It is both a reflection on time and a product of it. by @mlarino

Gift of Time - Coming soon

Rather than using time as a visual reference, the piece is built as a network of interacting systems that shape its behavior. Mechanical cycles, calendars, and lunar phases are translated into rules that continuously transform the composition.

Coming soon to @artblocks_io & @opensea
