Joining OpenSea’s Flagship Collection...

Gift of Time by @mlarino. A generative system built during the @artblocks_io x OpenSea residency in Marfa, Texas, that has been moving since the moment it began and keeps running whether or not anyone is watching.

Gift of Time was created during the @artblocks_io x OpenSea Artist Residency in Marfa, Texas — a month in the desert with no meetings, no emails, and a single responsibility: to think about art. Manuel arrived expecting the landscape to shape the work. Instead, around the third day, time itself slowed down, and that shift in perception became the piece. The title points in two directions at once: time as a subject and the time given to him by OpenSea, Art Blocks, and his family.

The work treats time as a structural system rather than a theme. Drawing a parallel between the mechanics of a watch and those of a blockchain, it weaves together the many ways humans have tracked time — calendars, the moon, the stars, the sun. It runs on blockchain time, already in motion before you load it and continuing after you leave. Its origin point is fixed: 5:30 PM on June 10th, the moment Manuel photographed the Marfa sign upon his arrival.

The inclusion of Gift of Time 230 in our Flagship Collection honors an experiment in letting a generative system live on its own time — built in the desert, tied to the chain, and left to keep moving whether or not anyone is watching.

Welcome home, 230 🌊

Gift of Time

Last year, in the wide open landscape of Marfa TX, resident artist Manuel Lariño—selected for our Art Blocks x @OpenSea Marfa Residency program—noticed a shift in time.

“In the desert, I felt time move differently. It stretched, slowed, and became something I noticed… Moments felt longer, attention sharpened, and I became increasingly aware of each moment as it passed.”
-@mlarino

Marfa allowed Lariño to direct his newfound awareness into focused creativity, developing a rhythmic generative art system that is driven by time.

In Gift of Time, colorful pulleys and gears harmonize like the internal movement of a jeweled watch.

Behind the scenes, these component parts are controlled by an algorithm built on real, measurable events.

“Different ways of measuring time, such as mechanical cycles, calendars, and lunar phases, are translated into rules that continuously transform the work.”
-@mlarino

Lariño’s thoughtful code is designed for its networked environment: the algorithm is a beneficiary of the blockchain’s uninterrupted movement, keeping time whether we observe it or not.

“It synchronizes with the present moment, but it does not begin when it is viewed; it does not stop when it disappears from the screen.”
-@mlarino

We are appreciative of this enduring work of art, part of the unfolding story of artistic expression in Marfa, TX.

Many thanks to Manuel Lariño for sharing his unique experience with us.

Gift of Time by Manuel Lariño releases on OpenSea on April 30, 2026.

Genuary - Day 11 & 12
Quine × Boxes only
Prompt by @mlarino & @stranger_in_the_q

This project combines both prompts into a single system.

At its core, this is a quine: a program that outputs its own source code.
The code you’re seeing on screen is not a copy or a recording it is the program continuously printing, executing, and referencing itself in real time.

The quine is built as a self-contained execution loop that:

Tracks which functions are running
Logs its own behavior
Outputs its own source code line by line
Resets and reorganizes itself over time

Each frame, the program updates an internal state that represents its “identity”, execution history, coherence, and runtime events. These values are not just visual they are exported as live data and used to drive the 3D scene.

For Day 12 (Boxes only), the visual world is built entirely from instanced boxes using the POPX system by @_mini_uv.
There are no custom meshes everything you see is boxes reacting to data coming directly from the quine.

The quine exports CHOP channels such as:

Current function being executed
Number of function calls
Execution cycles
Coherence level
Glitch triggers
Runtime uptime

These values control:

Camera position and movement
Lighting intensity and direction
Box scale, spacing, and instance behavior

Scene resets and transitions

The system is audio-reactive:
The music by @pauk2001 drives the timing, resets, and intensity of the quine. When the music peaks, the quine destabilizes, glitches, and eventually resets itself, starting the self-writing process again from zero.

What I like about this piece is that nothing is decorative.
The text is the program.
The glitches are execution errors.
The boxes are driven by real runtime data.
The reset is an actual reset.

It’s a system watching itself run, exposing its internal logic, and using that logic to shape the visual output.
