Gold Coast Marathon 2026 - 2.42.18

There’s something special about racing your hometown. I’ve never heard so much support. Every year the Gold Coast Marathon reminds me why it’s my favourite weekend of the year.

This is always the race where I take a swing at something ambitious. This year I set out for 2:39, knowing it was a risk but hoping I could hang on.

The last 10km definitely slowed down, but one thing experience has taught me is that marathon blow-ups don’t have to become disasters. I kept running hard, refused to look at my watch until 41km, and honestly I’d recommend that to anyone. Most of the time it’s never as bad as your mind is telling you.

I crossed the line in 2:42:18. Around a four-minute PB in just four months, and while sub-2:40 wasn’t there this time, it feels closer than ever. Hopefully Osaka is where that barrier finally falls.

One of the best parts of the weekend was sharing it with so many good mates. Seeing familiar faces all over the course and hearing people yelling your name when you’re deep in the hurt makes a massive difference.

I’ll do a full race breakdown on the podcast over the next few days.

A huge thank you to @samanthaeveblack for putting up with a pretty nervous, moody version of me during marathon week and always supporting the amount of time training takes. I couldn’t do it without you.

And to @kyle_weise @kylesruncoaching , thanks for the guidance, the belief and, more importantly, just being a bloody good mate. Also thanks to @mattinglisfox for pacing me to 30k and bringing the vibes and motivation

Big thanks as well to the team at @coastpt for helping me stay healthy and limit the strength losses that seem to come with getting older. by @mlawrence9

🌧️ RAIN, HAIL OR SHINE. NO EXCUSES. 🏃‍♂️🔥

Big sessions aren’t meant to be easy.

When the weather turns ugly, the work still gets done.

No shortcuts. No excuses. Just discipline, consistency and showing up when it matters most.

The work you put in when no one’s watching is what counts on race day. 🔒

Six years of early alarms, endless banter and more laughs than I can count.

From interstate race weekends to overseas trips, you've been there for all of it. I've watched you do incredible things as an athlete and build your coaching into what it is today, and honestly it inspires me to be a little more like you every day.

Thank you @kyle_weise and @kylesruncoaching for the plans, the patience and the belief, even on the days I didn't have much in myself.

One day I'll beat you. Probably when you're 70 and running in thongs. I'm a patient man. by @mlawrence9

Two marathon PB attempts. Four weeks apart. Never tried this before.

Osaka first, all in for a PB. Then Seoul four weeks later for PB attempt number two.

The plan with my coach Kyle is simple. Osaka is the last big key session of the marathon block. After that it's just sharpening and freshening up for Seoul.

Recover as quickly as possible, 4 to 6 days, then start jogging. First speed session is about 10 days after Osaka. Then just four or five sessions to sharpen up and stay fit, because Osaka itself will give me a lot of fitness.

The tough part is being on holidays, so there'll be some treadmill running. That's fine.

A lot of people would say don't do it, the rule is two or three marathons a year. But I like being the experiment. Trying new things and seeing if it can be done. Kyle reckons I can pull it off if I do it smart and follow the program.

Would you try two marathons in four weeks?

Spent the morning in the lab at Griffith Uni as a volunteer in a running shoe study.
Mask on to measure my oxygen use, markers on every joint, and a treadmill that measures the force of every step.
The team here researches how a shoe’s stiffness (the carbon plate) and its foam energy return affect how much energy you use and how your ankle works. Their latest review of 48 studies found super shoes improve running economy by about 2.7%. The plate or the foam on its own made no clear difference. It’s the combination that seems to work.
Pretty cool seeing the science behind what we race in.

Ever wondered why marathon times keep tumbling? Coach David Roche just dropped a cracker of a video on it, How To Get Faster: 9 Lessons from Pro Road Running. Well worth a watch.

A lot of what the pros are doing comes back to a few simple things. Build some power, train to adapt rather than smash yourself, fuel properly and work on fatigue resistance all year.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. I take a similar approach myself with a few small tweaks, and I always make sure I know the purpose of every session.

What's your go to long run?

Running can feel like a boring sport sometimes. Same roads, same watch, same chase for a faster time. Melbourne reminded me it's so much more than that.

This weekend I had a bib on and no pressure at all. My only job was to film Runny for Dave, and I laughed the whole way round. Watching Eliud beat everyone was beautiful too. Seeing someone that good do what he does never gets old.

The part I'll remember most is the people. Everyone out there was running for their own reason. Some were chasing a PB, some were running for someone they've lost, some just wanted to finish. I got to watch my training group dig deep and push themselves, then celebrate with them after. And when someone's race didn't go their way, we carried each other, literally, all the way to dinner.

That's what keeps me in this sport. Not the times, but the people you find along the way. Thank you Melbourne, I'm so grateful for this weekend.

What gets you to the start line? 👇

Two doors shut next Monday, and both of them are a big deal.

The Sydney 2027 ballot closes at 9:00am Brisbane time on 19 October. It's free, so if you're even half thinking about it, get your name in.

Osaka's charity entry and lottery payments close the same day, and Frankfurt's late entry shuts the day before.

The full list, with every price in Aussie dollars, is in Issue 7 of The Running Desk: therunningdesk.substack.com (link in bio too).

Which one are you putting your name in for?

Melbourne is done and dusted. If your race didn't go to plan, this one's for you.

I've had plenty of disappointing races over the years, especially while I was chasing sub 3. This is how I've learnt to deal with them.

What's the race that taught you the most? 👇

One of the runners I coach is chasing a sub 1:40 half on Sunday, and the nerves have well and truly kicked in. This is what I told him.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. What do you tell yourself on the start line? 👇

Easy run, sunrise, good company. Most of my week looks like this, not hard sessions.
