“I need to feel free, otherwise there won’t be any music” – ML Buch

ML Buch is taking the nomadic mindset that made her a figurehead of Copenhagen’s experimental-pop scene further afield, composing for string ensembles, working in film music and, after years of creating alone, discovering the possibilities of collaboration.

@mlbuch_ covers issue 182 of @crackmagazine 📰

While her breakthrough 2023 album ‘Suntub’ was about experimenting with the sounds and textures of synths, guitar and voice, these days Buch is more occupied with classical and instrumental composition. Over the past year or so, she has composed works for the Venice Biennale and C2C festival, contributed to a film score by Oliver Coates and reworked a track from a Werner Herzog documentary.

A newfound confidence is guiding Buch as she moves beyond her hugely popular and distinctive sound. “It feels like people are open to whatever I’m up to, and that feeling of not needing to live up to weird expectations is just very important for me,” she says, tentatively. “I can be who I am and do my thing.”

_______________________________________
ML Buch:
ML Buch is Marie Louise Buch, a Copenhagen-based composer, producer, guitarist and vocalist. In her compositional practice, ML Buch approaches music in an almost architectural way. Raw material is generated through immersion in playing and assembling, allowing space for chance and intuition to shape the work. Her live performances - both solo and in group formations - reflect a fascination with combining 7-string electric guitars in open tunings with synthetic instruments and electronic experimentation.
_______
Jules Reidy:
Working across song cycles and electro-acoustic composition for solo performance, ensembles, and site-responsive contexts, Jules Reidy creates music that explores devotional love, transcendence, and dissolution. Their practice evokes states of uncanniness, dissociation, imagination, and the void.
Their current collaborations include projects with Sun Kit, Judith Hamann, Andrea Belfi, Sam Dunscombe, David Grubbs, Jan St. Werner and Ivan Cheng.
_______
Harry Gorski-Brown:
Harry Gorski-Brown is an artist based in Glasgow. He makes music and audiovisual works, with a focus on traditional Gaelic music alongside electronic processing. He performs using voice, Scottish small pipes and fiddle. Recent ventures include the tape Durt Dronemaker After Dreamboats, a music-theatre collaboration with Annabelle Playe and Rima Ben Brahim for big pipes named Elephant, you shake your sheep!, solo performances on big pipes and electronics at events such as Unsound Krakow and working with artist Wojciech Rusin on Drift, a piece premiered with Sinfonietta Cracovia in 2025. taken in PHONO by @mlbuch_

Latency presents Popol Vuh’s unreleased Herzog score reimagined by james K (@___pet___), Lorenzo Senni (@lorenzo_senni), and ML Buch (@mlbuch_). Out 13 November.

Composed for Werner Herzog’s documentary The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner (1974), this previously unreleased score by the German musical collective Popol Vuh accompanies the extraordinary flights of Swiss ski flyer and woodcarver Walter Steiner. Internationally celebrated for his record-breaking ski flying in the 1970s, Steiner (born 1951) became a two-time world champion and earned the nickname “the bird man.” Popol Vuh’s ethereal score elevates Steiner’s flights beyond the realm of sporting achievement, giving musical form to what Herzog would later call “ecstatic truth”: a poetic reality that reaches beyond objective fact toward a deeper emotional and spiritual experience.

Founded by Florian Fricke in Munich in 1969, Popol Vuh are considered one of the most influential German avant-garde groups to emerge from the progressive rock movement of the 1970s, pioneering the use of the Moog synthesizer. Beginning with Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Florian Fricke and Werner Herzog developed one of cinema’s most distinctive artistic collaborations. Across more than a decade of films—including Heart of Glass, Nosferatu, Fitzcarraldo, and Cobra Verde—Popol Vuh’s scores became an essential part of Herzog’s cinematic language, shaping the immersive atmosphere and emotional intensity that define his films.

To accompany this release, three contemporary artists—james K, ML Buch, and Lorenzo Senni—revisit Popol Vuh’s original soundtrack. Their reinterpretations create a dialogue across five decades, revealing the enduring resonance of Popol Vuh’s music.

Does one need real-life experience to feel nostalgic? Danish artist Marie Louise Buch answers this age-old question in pop music with a decisive ‘definitely maybe.’ Her songs, particularly those on her latest album Suntub, revel in a realm beyond the space-time continuum. Her seven-string Stratocaster is a faithful companion, yet you’ll search in vain for a singer-songwriter sound. Instead: adventurous experimental pop that sounds as though Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny and the prank-hop-artist Dean Blunt have been caught up in a retro-futuristic fever dream. Sounds wild? Only until ML Buch’s heavenly voice brings it all together. taken in Stadtgarten Köln by @mlbuch_
