First 2 shows of the @ichikoaoba North America tour done! I mixed monitors for these shows, which featured Ichiko in collaboration with @taroumebayashi and @12ensemble. I was very fortunate to have the guidance of @casxtx at FoH, as well as terrific musicians on stage and an input list full of @neumann.berlin @dpa_microphones mics and @rupert_neve DIs

@waltdisneyconcerthall sounds as amazing as it looks, and the @laphil team were great to work with. The crew at @sdbalboatheatre also made things easy for production.

Big thanks to account manager of the year (it’s only April) @captainbaint @sound.image.official for the control package, and our teammates at @clairglobal in LA for their support. I chose @yamaha_proaudio_official DM7 to pair with Toshi’s request for a CL5. @dbaudiotechnik M4 wedges were spec’ed for Ichiko and sidefills, ensemble monitoring was via hardwired IEMs from @shure. I had wireless PSM1000 and my @64audio A12t CIEMs

Grateful to be a part of the show! Thank you Ichiko!!

Whacky week bouncing around the continent with @msrebeccablack. LA rehearsals for the live show, followed by 3 fly dates doing DJ sets on the @trixiemattel Solid Pink Disco tour. The crowds were great in Denver, Montréal, and Pittsburgh, the early morning flights to get between them, not so much. Audio was in good hands with nice rigs and quality engineers in all 3 rooms, which allowed me to focus on TM duties. @mtelusmontreal was a particular standout, with a bumping @l.acoustics.official K3/KS28 system. Big thanks to Trixie and her team for welcoming us to the tour and throwing such a great party each night 🪩🎀🎉

“Clean up your house, clean up your side of the street, get right with your people.”

Rest out loud, Vince. Thank you for the music.

Baby’s first Boiler Room, and it was a doozy! In September I traveled to DC to serve not just 1 but 2 queens @slayyyter and @msrebeccablack doing double duty as Tour Manager and FOH (quadruple duty? 🤔) for a double-header @boilerroomtv taping. The DC crowd turned out and the party had great old-school warehouse rave vibes. I was blessed with a kicking @dbaudiotechnik_gmbh KSL8 and B22 rig, but a terrible mix position and no tablet remote control for the console 😬. I was 20 feet from the subs, and not in the direct field of either the mains nor the rear stage fills. For the first 15 mins of Rebecca’s set I could get out in front of the mains, but after that it was too crowded. After the room was packed, I could get myself into the direct field of one of the rear stage point-source hangs without exiting the tech world, and I used that to reference that I had Slayyyter’s vocal appropriately balanced with the track. Fav moments include Slayyy dancing with a fan across the barricade during Rebecca’s set, @owenjacksonforever with the sickest flip to intro Purr, and RB with the fake-out of the night. Check the clips here.

Full videos are out today on YouTube. This was a super challenging day, but also a lot of fun. Big ups to the team, especially RB, Slayyy, Owen, @kcon101 @julietteontheinternet, and @boilerroomtv for the party and for preserving this for posterity on the internet. Links to the full sets in the respective artist’s bios.

From watching Kacey from the crowd in 2019, to handing off her wireless mic and headphone pack to her engineer to then hand to her in 2024, I’ve come so far! 😅 In all seriousness, it was a thrill to join the Sabrina Carpenter camp for a week to help put on an amazing headline performance @outsidelands. A huge thanks to @clairglobal and @whitney_leigh_audio for the call, and to Nate and Miguel for welcoming me to the team and running such a top-notch stage and monitor world.

TW: vehicle crash, trauma, PTSD…

Today is my Alive Day. On Feb 29, 2020 the tour bus I was traveling in crashed while I was asleep in my bunk. The bunk above me collapsed and came down on top me, as did my friend and tour mate who had been sleeping in it. The bus came to a stop on top of roadside crash barrels and needed to be stabilized before fire and rescue could safely board to get us out. We were trapped in the wreckage for a frighteningly long time.

In the days immediately following the crash, I experienced a disorienting mixture of a sort of state of shock crossed with an overwhelming elation to have survived a near-death experience. But that messy joy faded quickly. Symptoms of Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) started to appear. I knew I needed help and reached out for trauma counseling right away, but there was no stopping the rising tide. The terror I experienced during the crash overloaded my nervous system to the point where my mind and body were in a constant state of trauma response. After a month of things only getting worse, I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

What followed were some of the darkest and most challenging years of my life. It’s more than I can catalog here, but the worst of it was that I lost my sense of self, my sense of being. I said and did things that were hurtful to people that I loved. PTSD made me a different person, someone who’s thoughts and actions I didn’t like and didn’t want to be around. But it was me, and I was stuck with myself. I couldn’t escape my self loathing or my depression.

The loss and grief I had to face along this journey has been overwhelming. In a span of just over 3 years, I lost my job as a globe-trotting tour manager and engineer, then I lost my mind to PTSD, I lost my Dad to his decade-long struggle with Alzheimer’s, I lost the family I was building with my partner and her daughter when our relationship crumbled in the wake of my mental health crisis, and I lost my cat Emmylou Hairball to cancer. At times it felt like more than I could bear. I’ve worked like hell to reclaim my mind and rebuild my career, but these other losses will always be.

More install fun with new PAs in classic Bay Area theaters! This time at a personal fav, @greatamericanmusichall, and once again working with @soundimageproductions_sf and @soundimage_az @sound.image.official. This was a complete revamp of the audio system: new PA and monitors from @dbaudiotechnik_gmbh, and new @avid.livesound S6L consoles. We hung the mains in June ’22 and came back the first week of January to install subs, fills, monitors and consoles.

I’ve got a long personal history with this venue: seeing shows here as a teen, mixing monitors as a house engineer when I first moved back to the Bay and more recently a couple of amazing tour stops with @marianhillmusic and @dennislloyd (who shot a music video in the venue during our show!) I was psyched to be a part of this install and help the venue take a big audio leap forward. taken in Great American Music Hall by @mlgmix

Putting up new sound systems in old theaters. I spent a week in Monterey with @soundimage_az @soundimageproductions_sf installing a new @dbaudiotechnik_gmbh PA for this 1300 cap performance space. A huge part of the job was working in the ceiling installing steel beams for new motor points for the main hangs. I spent a lot of time playing “the floor is lava”, stepping only on the ceiling joists while trying not to fall through the plaster ceiling to the stage 40’ below. Also a lot of time on ladders installing delay speakers under the balcony. Good times with a great crew @sound.image.official taken in Golden State Theatre by @mlgmix
