‘I Stand On Your Shores’ Mixed media assemblage, 15x32” My work for the exhibition IT’S CALLED LAKE ONTARIO, co-curated by myself and Matt Vanderlee. Opened last night at Frank’s Chop Shop ROC. Using found detritus from the beaches of Lake Ontario near my home. Most items collected in 2018 when the lake levels were high and the piles of ‘beach gems’ were in abundance. Included are: sand, stones, seed pods, bird skull, vertebrae, worn cans (a Genesee beer can bottom), bottle cap and pull tab, beach glass and pottery fragments, and mixed tumbled plastics. Attached to vintage map from the mid 60s, with collaged maps, pencil marks, silver sharpie, and vintage pencil text. Mounted on cardboard on plywood and framed with a vintage wood frame spray painted in layers of silver and aqua.

IT’S CALLED LAKE ONTARIO

‘It’s Called Lake Ontario’ gathers an international and local collection of visual artists to share a clear, unified statement about the state of the Lake—one man cannot take what is ours, cannot pit us against our neighbors, and will not rebrand us to fit his dystopic vision of the future.

What’s in a name?

Memory, history, value, understanding, culture, identity.

This is our home. This is our lake. Symbols matter. Names matter.

Lake Ontario matters to us.

Artists and Curators @mlmgraphic and @matt_vanderlee have gathered fifty artists from around the world from as far as the United Kingdom, Nicaragua, our neighbors on the other side of the shore in Canada and more, along with our neighbors in the midwest states and a great group of local working artists to express this very simple message.

Admission to Frank’s gallery is always free, but we ask visitors to our opening reception to consider bringing uncooked, packaged rice and/or beans to aid the work of artist @erica_likes_alligators efforts in supporting immigrants targeted by the Trump administration facing unjust deportation in Rochester.

The show opens Friday, October 2nd from 6-9pm, and will be hanging throughout October at @frankschopshoproc
