Community Spotlight Series | DAO's Violence Prevention Grant Recipient

Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders (MLPML) (@mlpml3701) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2017. MLPML uses academia, professional development, and life skills training to teach young adults ages, between the ages of 10 and 24, to become mentorship leaders. Vincent Garrett, or as the young people affectionately refer to him, Mr. G., is a native of West Philadelphia, an educator, entrepreneur, youth leader, and father. "Every young person is passing on something to the next generation. The goal is to take the advice, guidance, and direction and give it to [others]."

Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders is a recipient of the DAO's External Engagement & Government Affairs Division's Violence Prevention Grant. The DAO has awarded community-based organizations more than $7.5 million dollars in violence prevention grants since 2021. by @mlpml3701

Mentoring ain’t something I play with. 💯 I’ve proven time and time again that I’m one of the best at building relationships with young people that LAST.

I was Juice’s kindergarten teacher… now I’m here for Senior Night watching him prepare for his next chapter. 🎓🏈

The power of relationship + influence = SUCCESS.

Shoutout to Juice! Senior Night. IMHOTEP Football. College bound. 🫡🔥

A heartfelt thank you to Assata Thomas, Executive Director of the City of Philadelphia’s Division of Reentry (DOR), and Patty Jones Thompson, First Deputy, @patjones_epc for believing in me and opening doors for this partnership. I truly appreciate your support! 🙏🏽

Thank you to the team at Southeast Youth Development Center (SYDC) for the opportunity to mentor young men behind the walls who will one day return home and do great things.

I’m excited for these young men to experience what true mentorship is all about—genuine relationships, accountability, guidance, and someone who believes in their potential.

A heartfelt thank you to the Pulitzer Center for supporting our organization and believing in our mission. Your support helps us continue creating opportunities and empowering the next generation of leaders.

Real work. Real relationships. Real results.

Thank you, God, for continuing to open doors and allowing me to walk in my purpose. This is bigger than me.

This is God’s work! 🙌🏽❤

✨ Because of the Trust… communities are growing!

In Episode 5 of Because of the Trust, we’re highlighting Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders, a Fall 2025 awardee of the Pathways to Impact Grant by the Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust! We got to speak with Vincent Garrett, founder and Executive Director of MLPML.

Garrett speaks to founding a program he saw was needed in his community. With an educational background, he felt his purpose included, but was not limited to, the classroom. Whether he knew it or not at the time, MLPML’s mission is the type of initiative that pushes forward the vision of Reverend Dr. Leon H. Sullivan. Community through provided opportunity.

When small businesses thrive, communities do too. Especially Because of the Trust!

GOD, I hope You’re pleased with me.

Today I completed another mission. I had the honor of walking beside a young man I’ve watched grow from a little boy into a college freshman on his very first day. Moments like these remind me why I do this work.

The mission continues.
