POSTS STORIES REELS
during my time here in italy, i intend to visit the centres of italian goldsmithing traditions. think of it as a pilgrimage to the homeland; one of heritage, after the passing of my last grandparent in 2025, but also one of craft. the layers and richness of these traditions are not linear. art and craft are deeply rooted in almost every facet of italian culture, passed down through hands, families, process and generations. it has made me think about my own hands and my own lineage, and how deeply connected the two are. i am simultaneously a second-generation australian and hundreds of generations italian; carrying, in some small way, the legacy and stories of those who came before me. my latest stop brought me to ravenna. once the capital of the western roman empire and forever home to some of the most breathtaking mosaics in the world. i sat down with two mosaicists working in the traditional ravenna method. @annalisa.marcucci.904 @barbaraliveranistudio since travelling through italy, I’ve become increasingly intrigued by roman filati micro-mosaic; a technique used by @lesibille and within the vatican mosaic studio. fire. earth. water. air. the four elements keep appearing in the way I think about working with glass; whether through micro-mosaic or fire enamelling, or clay for that matter - my other love. it’s an idea i’m beginning to explore as I continue my @issinstitute fellowship research: different traditions, different applications, but materials transformed through many of the same elemental forces. i took an extreme beginner’s class with @barbaraliveranistudio, but perhaps the greatest lesson came from seeing ravenna’s UNESCO world heritage mosaics in person. they are truly not to be missed. …and if there’s one thing I can say without a doubt, it’s that these skills are lifelong commitments. you are forever the student. by @mlr_
📍 Firenze two weeks spent learning from maestro paganini @paganiniarredisacri , who quite literally makes pieces for the Vatican, is one of those “pinch me”, once-in-a-lifetime situations i’m still trying to wrap my head around. it took me a while to find the @sacredartschoolfirenze . eventually, it came through a word-of-mouth recommendation (thank you hannah hall), and somehow i became only the second australian to ever attend one of their programs. the school built a specialised program around my desire to better understand the very complex world of fire enamelling. over two weeks, i was introduced to the history of the medium, the preparation of metals and enamels, and multiple techniques that have been used for centuries, many dating back to the middle ages. what struck me most was learning that even here in Italy, where these traditions run incredibly deep, fire enamelling is becoming a rare skill. many of the artisans who hold this knowledge are reaching retirement without anyone to pass it on to. it hits me to my core when I continually hear of beautiful hand skills dying, falling into history books. which makes having the opportunity to sit at the bench and learn directly from someone who has spent his life mastering goldsmithing techniques feel pretty damn special. a very surreal start to my @issinstitute fellowship. 🇮🇹 by @mlr_

turns out changing the material doesn’t necessarily change the maker. i started ceramics as a way to step outside jewellery for a minute. bigger objects, freedom to play, to let loose and absolutely no idea what I was doing. naturally, I started making vaguely ancient vessels. objects that look uncovered vs. designed. there’s something very freeing about hand-building, experimenting with texture, surrendering things to the kiln gods and slowly realising that the shapes, surfaces and references i’m drawn to seem to follow me from one medium to another. repetition, surface embellishment, ancient. a reminder to keep making things just to see where they take you. 🫶🏺 by @mlr_
