@reshare_app • @centropr “The worst slum in New York.”

These are the infamous words of Robert Moses as he displaced over 2,000 Puerto Rican families from San Juan Hill. The New York City Urban Renewal Project displaced almost 2,000 families to build what is now Lincoln Center and Fordham University.

Utilizing never-before-seen archival documents made available to CENTRO by Lincoln Center, as well as other archival materials from that time period, the Afterlives of San Juan Hill exhibit delves into the larger history of the Lincoln Square Urban Renewal Project and traces the process through which these families were disrupted and displaced.

These records invite us to engage in a necessary reframing of the scripts that upheld the deprivation in the name of development across New York City in the mid-twentieth century. By focusing on the lived experiences of the community’s residents, Afterlives of San Juan Hill highlights the individual stories of Lincoln Square Residents during this pivotal time.

On display now until October 11th at Fordham University at Lincoln Center - don’t miss out on this piece of history.

Gloria Steinem's influence in my life goes back to my very early years. My mother was active in #PuertoRico's feminist movement alongside @riveralassen and so many other women. It was that movement which raised me and shaped my political point of view. My mother and all these women got to know Gloria Steinem and her work and she got to know them and their work (she visited Puerto Rico in 1971) and each were mutually inspired by the work of the other. So, the cycle continued with my generation. My mom and I are together right now traveling abroad when we learned of Gloria Steinem's passing. I asked Mami what thoughts she had. This is what she shared:

"A wise voice. A passionate voice. A respectful voice. She saw all women, not sectionalized but as one true sisterhood. She was a humanitarian. We (the feminist movement in Puerto Rico) aligned ourselves with that philosophy, reflected that philosophy and came to respect her because of it. Gloria's voice and her activism gave a platform to the issues of injustice to women, and as a Puerto Rican woman I felt seen and supported in that work."

I was proud to have met Gloria Steinem multiple times across my years of activism, was thankful for her support when I ran for Speaker, and when I asked her about her visit to Puerto Rico and the feminist leaders she met along the way, she spoke fondly and respectfully of that exchange. What a woman. What a legacy.

Gracias Gloria por tu lucha y tu trabajo. Tremenda mujer. Tremendo legado. The work continues.

This powerful exhibit organized & curated by Dr. Johanna Fernández (QEPD) on display through August 20 in the plaza adjacent to @theshedny is a must visit! Take the time to honor her and her life's work. To see our history y nuestra LUCHA front and center within a geography in Manhattan that holds significant meaning for Boricuas is not lost on me. Hell's Kitchen, San Juan Hill are neighborhoods where so many of our people migrated to and from where they were forcefully displaced all in the name of a "progress (i.e. urban renewal)" we were never envisioned to be a part of. The youth who led the movements that emerged and documented in this exhibit were unapologetic in their orgullo and their drive to enact change by challenging the status quo & the systemic racism that sought to erase us.

Let's take Dr. Fernández own words as inspiration. Let's reflect on the struggle that has laid the foundation for our present and let it inspire the ongoing struggle for equity and justice moving forward.

"The past is never truly past. This exhibition reveals a long history of racial violence and dehumanization against Latinos that has too often been forgotten. Recovering this history is not about reopening old wounds—it’s about understanding their origins so we can reckon honestly with our past, strengthen our democracy, and help ensure these injustices are never repeated."

What a great exhibit at @museumofcityny. Every visit I learn a new facet of #NYC history. Read below to find out more and then make the trek to my neck of the woods and make a day or evening of it!

"The Museum of the City of New York, in collaboration with New York City Health + Hospitals Arts in Medicine presents Another Wonderland: Abram Champanier’s Alice Mural.

The exhibition celebrates the rescue and decades-long restoration of Alice of Wonderland Visiting New York, a major New Deal–era mural cycle created for the children’s ward at Gouverneur Hospital between 1938 and 1940. Commissioned through the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project, the sixteen-panel series reimagined Lewis Carroll’s beloved characters exploring 1930s New York City—from the subway and Brooklyn Bridge to Coney Island and Central Park—bringing color, fantasy, and joy to a space dedicated to healing.

After decades of painstaking restoration, and along with two faithfully reproduced panels and a selection of archival photographs, the mural panels will be on view together for the first time in nearly fifty years. The exhibition also situates the mural within the broader story of the WPA and its role in transforming public spaces across New York City. Several museum administration's & Board of Director's ago (to the chagrin of many of us) El Museo del Barrio made a terrible decision to change the official name to El Museo dique for "marketing" purposes & to be able to have the Museum appeal to a wider audience. In other words, in their eyes, having El Barrio in the name was a hindrance to make this a world class institution. This was a conscious decision by an elite group to turn its back to the community and to discard the deep history that led to the creation of this Puerto Rican and Latino museum by feeding/perpetuating the toxic stereotypes of #ElBarrio & who we are. So it makes me happy to see that the current leadership of the Museum has reinstated the use of the full and original name of El Museo del Barrio paying homage & respect to the institution's roots.
