Today is Latina Equal Pay Day, meaning: Latinas who work full time, year round, and part time earn only 53 cents for every $1 earned by a white male. So it takes Latinas an additional 10 months to catch up to what a white male makes in a year.

Thank you @activistmonicaramirez & @mujerxsrising for reminding us every year of the work left for pay equity & thank you @poderistas
for convening us ✨

We need #LatinaEqualPay for #Trabajadoras everywhere.

At our first Boricuas Holding It Down Awards in 2024, we, with many of you, honored Denise Oliver-Vélez. She was absolutely elated and wearing the colors of Yemaya. Dr. Johanna Fernández was kind enough to drive her in and Denise was surrounded by other former Black Panthers and Young Lords, like Minerva Solá, who recently transitioned after a lifetime of activism. Sylvia Hernández designed a special award for Denise and Mariposa delivered a beautiful tribute.

Denise was far more than an ally - she lived a special bond between Boricuas and Black Americans that was forged in the streets, tenements, and college campuses of NYC, one that is little understood outside of here. She was direct, clear and always willing to share her insight.

She was the first woman to lead on the Central Committee of the Young Lords Party in NYC but her militancy started years before in a household that stood up to racist violence and injustices. Watch the free documentary TAKEOVER to hear her.

Denise always spoke about mentors to her and other Lords like the Panamanian professor Dr. Carlos Russell and the legendary Evelina López Antonetty of United Bronx Parents.

"Oliver-Velez...became the executive director of the Black Filmmaker Foundation and was a co-founder and program director of Pacifica’s first minority-controlled radio station, WPFW-FM, in Washington, D.C. She also published ethnographic research on HIV/AIDS and co-wrote, with Iris Morales, the foreword to The Young Lords: A Reader (2010), edited by Darrel Enck-Wanzer. An Iyalorisha Yemaya, Oliver-Velez was also an adjunct Professor of Anthropology and Women’s Studies at SUNY New Paltz." (Black Women Radicals)

At the Daily Kos and online, Denise for years wrote or highlighted nearly every week an issue in Puerto Rico or affecting Boricuas. She had a Caribbean Matters column and penned rich columns about Black music.

Share her story. Read and save all she wrote because it is loaded with history and first-hand experience. Incorporate her voice in curriculums and events. This is the little we can do by a revolutionary who boldly led and changed the course for Black and Brown women and people.

Bolivia beauty shots in 60 seconds! Sometimes there just aren’t enough words for a place like Bolivia. Every turn revealed another incredible view that made me stop, take it all in, and reach for my camera. From colorful lagoons and beautiful cloud formations, to endless salt flats and wildlife in the most unexpected places, these are a few of my favorite moments from an unforgettable adventure! Highly recommend a visit. 🇧🇴

One of the many beautiful stops on our road trip in Bolivia was the Hidden Llama Valley. After driving through miles of the dry Altiplano, we came across this beautiful landscape with scattered llamas roaming freely. This valley is 12,000 feet above sea level.

🌵One of our intriguing visits was to Isla Incahuasi, adjacent to the Salt Flats. It’s actually the remains of an ancient volcano, which makes it even more fascinating. Its name comes from the Quechua language and means “House of the Inca.” Some of the cacti are more than 30 feet tall and are estimated to be hundreds, if not thousands, of years old. Walking among them while surrounded by the world’s largest salt flat was absolutely stunning! It was definitely one of those places that was even more impressive in person than in photos.

This is salt, not snow! WOW is an understatement. Visiting Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni (Salt Flats) was one of those experiences that makes you stop in utter amazement. It’s hard to wrap your head around just how massive it is. This is the world’s largest salt flat, stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s nearly 12,000 feet above sea level and the scenery feels almost unreal. Beneath all that sparkling salt are an estimated 10 billion tons of salt and more than 70% of the world’s known lithium reserves. It’s one of those places that truly takes your breath away.

🦩One of the coolest things about Bolivia? It’s home to three of the world’s six flamingo species: the Andean, James’ and Chilean. We saw them in the stunning high-altitude salt lakes and lagoons of the Andean Altiplano, at Laguna Colorada. Getting there was part of the adventure! We took a 4WD tour from Uyuni. Definitely a wildlife experience I’ll never forget!

The Short-tailed Chinchilla is a rare, high-altitude rodent. These cuties are on the brink of extinction for their ultra-soft fur and are now critically endangered. There are isolated populations remaining in remote areas like Bolivia’s Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve.

Imagine being 16,000 feet above sea level (in the cold! - lol). Sol de Mañana is a famous geothermal field located in southwestern Bolivia, within the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. It is one of the highest geothermal fields on Earth.
