For over a decade, Mariana Schmidt has crafted rigorously simple architecture that moves between the ephemeral and the permanent. Since founding MNMA in 2015, she has embedded the earthiness of landscapes into homes, interiors, cultural spaces, and furniture.

Since its inception, MNMA has upheld its original posture: environment and design as one continuous field. In this transdisciplinary process, architects and visual artists converge, joining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary technology.

A practice guided by matter, light, and time.

At the Tietê Apartment, art is part of everyday life.

A sculptural work by Brazilian artist Celeida Tostes sits among books, furniture and collected objects. Each piece brings its own history and presence, creating an intimate dialogue between art, personal collections and the rituals of living.

A ground-floor apartment with limited access to natural light. Rather than accepting the depth of the plan as a limitation, the project used it as the starting point.

Daylight now enters from above, through openings positioned across the plan and from a private outdoor area. It moves across walls and surfaces as the day passes. The interior is no longer understood through a succession of enclosed rooms, but through light, proportion and extended visual relationships.

What happens when art is not placed within a home, but becomes part of its architecture?

At Tietê Apartment, the collection was never an addition. It was a starting point. Architecture, art and everyday life were conceived as a single landscape, dissolving the distinction between display and inhabitation.

Works coexist with books, furniture and objects, creating unexpected relationships through scale, proximity and use. Stone, timber and restrained surfaces give the interior weight and permanence, while remaining deliberately quiet architecture as a framework, never a backdrop.

Works by Antonio Manuel, Iole de Freitas, Raymundo Colares, Wlademir Dias-Pino, Décio Pignatari, Tunga, Rodrigo Andrade and Robert Rauschenberg introduce different tensions, densities and material presences throughout the rooms.

Not a home that contains art, but a home conceived through it.

Architecture for a collection. Tietê Apartment, 2026.

Schendel’s practice expanded the possibilities of drawing, investigating language, signs, transparency and the space between things. Tunga approached space from another direction, moving between sculpture, installation, performance, literature and psychoanalysis, creating works in which matter carries physical and symbolic weight.

In the apartment, these different artistic languages become part of the architecture itself. Works are not treated as isolated objects or decorative elements, but as presences that determine scale, rhythm, circulation and the way one moves through the rooms.

Art is not added to the architecture. It helps define it.

Bahá’í Temple, Brasília, Brazil. Commissioned Project, 2026.

More than an architectural object, the temple is the result of a shared process of construction. On land shaped collectively, architecture and community become inseparable.

Bahá’í Temple, Brasília, Brazil. Commissioned Project, 2026.

The Constructed Unit. Matter has no value in and of itself. Its value lies in the work that passes through it: shaping, laying, erecting. The human gesture does not disappear into matter; it remains inscribed within it.

The temple does not stand upon the land as a finished object. It emerges from the land itself. Before becoming architecture, it manifests as matter.

The building is not merely erected. It is cultivated.

A Unidade Construída. A matéria não possui valor isoladamente. Seu valor reside no trabalho que a atravessa. Moldar, assentar, erguer. O gesto humano não desaparece na matéria; permanece inscrito nela.

O templo não se estabelece sobre o território como um objeto acabado. Ele emerge do próprio território. Antes de se tornar arquitetura, manifesta-se como matéria.

O edifício não é apenas erguido. Ele é cultivado. by @mnmastudio
