Once upon a time there was a girl named Kore.

Her mother, Demeter, watched over growing things, and Kore’s world was still light and carefree - flowers, nature, nymphs and very few reasons to worry. ☀️🌿🌼

Then one day, everything changed.

Kore was taken into the Underworld and eventually returned to her mother.

But not quite as the same girl.

She came back as Persephone - queen of the world below. 💔

My first idea for LADY was much more obvious: femininity, beauty, grace… Aphrodite.

But then I started wondering: what actually makes someone a “lady”?

A look? A title? A role?

For me, this piece became about two women.

Demeter - the protective mother finally reunited with her daughter.

And Kore herself, no longer simply a carefree maiden, but Persephone: someone who has crossed a threshold and returned changed.

In one well-known tradition, Persephone divides the year between her mother and the Underworld, and their separation becomes part of the cycle of the seasons. 🌓

So I imagined her coming home exhausted, finally able to rest in her mother’s arms.

Maybe “lady” isn’t really about looking graceful.

Maybe it’s about who you become. ✨

Does it ever feel like modern culture remembers the loudest parts of mythology? 🏛️✨

Heroes. Monsters. Big battles. Superpowers. Saving the world.

All very impressive.

But can we talk about the thread? 🧶

Everyone remembers Theseus facing the Minotaur in the Labyrinth. The half-bull monster became a pop-culture icon all by itself.

But defeating it was only half the problem.

Ariadne gave Theseus a thin thread and showed him how to use it to find his way back out.

The hero had the strength. ✊

She gave him the way home. 🙌

And that tiny, fragile-looking thread connected him to the outside world while he walked deeper into the maze. 🖤

So for FLIMSY, I kept thinking about what we choose to celebrate more: the spectacular act of defeating the monster, or the quiet idea that made survival possible. 😏

Maybe the flimsy thing was never Ariadne’s thread.

Maybe it’s the idea that strength alone is enough. 😉

Hades has much better PR in the original myths than in many modern retellings.

While the rest of the divine family keeps producing drama, he mostly stays in the Underworld and handles his own business.

So for TOSS, no epic battle.

Just a god feeding his very unusual dog. 😏✨🐾🦴

If the Greek gods could sue for bad PR, Disney’s version of Hades might have some explaining to do. 😐

Because mythological Hades is surprisingly… chill. 😏

Other gods are constantly collecting scandals, rivalries and complicated side stories.

Hades mostly stays in the Underworld and does his job. 🫠

Heracles asks to borrow Cerberus?

Hades: fine. Just bring him back. 🙌

Orpheus shows up asking for the impossible?

Hades actually listens. 🙌

Chaos happening somewhere on Olympus?

Hades is usually nowhere near the group chat. 🙌

To be fair, his mythology isn’t completely drama-free either. But compared with some members of his divine family, his résumé is remarkably quiet. 😉

So for TOSS, I skipped the grand drama and imagined a very ordinary day in the Underworld:

Hades tossing a treat to Cerberus. 🐾🦴

Even the ruler of the Underworld has to feed the dog. 🖤

Orpheus managed to convince the rulers of the Underworld to give Eurydice back.

The price?

One incredibly simple rule: don’t look at her until you’re both outside.

He made it almost all the way.

Greek mythology has never been kinder to the word “almost.”

Ah, young love. 🫠✨❤️

He’s a superstar musician, idol of his generation, former member of a little band called The Argonauts, now doing very well with his solo career. 🪉🎶

She’s an earthbound girl, arborist and gardener, still very much into going out and having fun with her friends. 🌿🪴

Orpheus and Eurydice fall in love. They get married. ✨

And naturally, Greek mythology gives them approximately five minutes of peace. 🏛️

In one famous version, Eurydice attracts the unwanted attention of Aristaeus. While trying to get away from him, she runs into tall grass, steps too close to a hidden snake… and her next stop is the Underworld.

Orpheus is devastated. 💔

So he does what any reasonable superstar musician would do:
he goes directly to Hades to get his wife back.

His music moves the rulers of the Underworld enough that they agree to let Eurydice leave with him - under one condition.

No checking whether she’s still behind him.
No messages.
No notifications.
Absolutely no “quick selfie before we leave the Underworld.”

And just before the exit…
he looks back. 🫣

The real myth is much more tragic, of course. Orpheus turns because he desperately wants to see Eurydice - and with that single glance, loses her for the second time. 🥲

For RESCUE, I wanted that exact moment:

the rescue is almost complete.

Almost. 😶

Hecate is linked with magic, crossroads and thresholds. 🔮✨🏛️

Maybe that’s why this piece felt different from the start.

After days of fighting sketches, timing and my own tendency to “improve” things too far, this one simply worked.

I’m not saying anything mystical happened.

I’m just saying… the timing was suspicious. 🫣✨✍️

Hecate is the goddess of magic, crossroads, doors and thresholds - and one of the deities most closely linked with dogs. 🔮✨🐾

There are many things in this world that are difficult to explain. Even people who spend their lives trying to understand the unknown sometimes admit that not everything fits neatly into logic.

That is more or less how this piece felt.

Up to this prompt, Inktober had been difficult. I redid sketches, ran late, and nearly ruined finished pieces by trying to “improve” them. ✍️

And then came Hecate.

The image appeared in my head almost fully formed. The sketch worked immediately. I was afraid to overwork it, but somehow every detail found its place.

I even planned to keep the background simple.

That clearly didn’t happen.

I’m not superstitious, but this piece felt strangely effortless from start to finish.

Honestly, I don’t think I fully chose to draw it.

I think it was commissioned. 🫣

And I may have a guess who the client was. 😳

Jason’s quest for the Golden Fleece sounds like a classic hero story. 🐏✨🏛️

Until you notice how much of it only works because Medea is there. 😉

Magic, betrayal, escape, sacrifice… and then Jason meets someone else. 💔

Ancient mythology. Very modern problem. ✍️

Boy meets girl. Boy plays the hero. 💪

Girl meets boy. Girl falls in love. Helps him. Uses magic for him. Tricks people for him. Turns against her family, leaves her home, gives up her life as a princess, escapes with him, builds a new life with him and has his children. 🫨

Boy meets another girl. 💔

No, this isn’t actually the story of the Golden Fleece in my drawing. 🐏✨✍️

It’s the story of Jason - the man who was supposed to win it - and Medea, the woman who made that victory possible.

She helped him survive the impossible tasks set by her father, obtain the Golden Fleece and escape Colchis. What happened afterward gets considerably darker.

If you’ve never read their story, I highly recommend it - especially Euripides’ Medea. 🏛️✨📚

Because underneath all the gods, magic and heroic quests is something painfully familiar.

Centuries change. Places change. People change.

And somehow we keep telling versions of the same story.

Girl helps boy get the Golden Fleece.

Boy meets another girl.

Ancient Greek seers could read omens from a sacrifice by watching how the fire behaved. When the signs looked wrong, that was not the kind of answer a commander wanted before a campaign. 🔥✨🏺

For STINKY, I turned that bad forecast into smoke. 💨✨🐍

Who here believes in horoscopes? ✨

Be honest: if today’s forecast said, “Better focus on small tasks - larger plans may run into trouble,” would you postpone something important?

If you were a commander in ancient Greece, you probably would. 🏛️

The Greeks took divine signs seriously, and when an entire campaign was at stake, they wanted answers from the gods as quickly as possible.

That is where seers came in. 🔮

Their methods varied, but divination through sacrifice was especially important. In practice, people watched everything: how the offering burned, how the flame caught, and how the smoke behaved. If the fire looked wrong, the message was not encouraging. 🔥💨🐍

So for STINKY, I went with a bad omen rising straight out of the ritual fire.

A few words about the piece itself: at first I planned to use the Augean stables for this prompt, which would have made perfect sense. But the more I thought about how to show filthy stables without turning the whole image into an ecological disaster, the more I drifted toward sacrificial smoke instead.

And the tripod under the smoke is based on a real museum object. In its original function, it was a stand for large vessels like pithoi or amphorae, helping them stay stable - but the shape and pattern were too good to ignore. In a real camp, the brazier would probably have been metal for practical reasons, while in domestic or temple settings a stone vessel would make more sense. 🏺

Would you trust… the smoke?
