Before school starts back, pop into the Mobile @carnivalmuseum to see "Where the Boom Boom Began and Thrives: Carnival in Alabama"!

This incredible exhibit explores Carnival celebrations in and around Mobile in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this interwar period, Carnival traditions were carried north, "up the country," into the Black Belt, where nearly a dozen cities celebrated with parades, balls (with tableaux), coronations and pronouncements.

Many of these cities — including Selma, Demopolis, Hayneville, Livingston, Montgomery and even Tuscaloosa — and their revelatory histories are showcased in this exhibit, which is only on display through the end of the summer.

There's a new women's Mardi Gras society in Orange Beach!

The Mermaids of Pleasure is a spin-off group of the Mystics of Pleasure, an Orange Beach men's organization, according to a Facebook post.

"This new chapter was born out of overwhelming interest from our community of strong, passionate women who wanted a place to connect, celebrate and be a part of something truly special," the post reads. Mermaids of Pleasure has been in the works for two years.

The group plans to host "elegant events and Mardi Gras celebrations" and to serve as a place where women can come together to "celebrate life, friendship and purpose" and "give back" to the community.

They are now accepting founding members. Women must be 21-plus to join. Fill out an application at mermaidsofpleasure.com. by @mobile.mask

The 7th annual Krewe of Kindness ball — dubbed the “Mardi Gras Ball for All” — will take place March 21, and tickets are now available.

Krewe of Kindness is a local nonprofit supporting adaptive education and recreation in Mobile. This event raises funds for the group, which they use for purposes such as installing wheelchair-friendly beach mats and supporting a special needs science camp on Dauphin Island.

The ball is also a way to connect special needs families with one another.

The night includes dinner and dancing for all ages and abilities. Guests are not required to dress in costume de rigueur, but dressy attire is requested.

The ball will take place on Saturday, March 21, 6-9 p.m., at the Battle House Hotel, in the Moonlight Ballroom. The theme this year is “Down the Rabbit Hole.” The presenting sponsor is the Mapp Family Foundation.

The sudden closing of Wet Willie's in downtown Mobile has displaced MODI — the Mystic Order of Daiquiri Imbibers — who have been meeting at the daiquiri bar every Fat Tuesday for the past decade.

This Mardi Gras society is composed mostly of food and beverage workers, who celebrate the end of the busy Carnival season by drinking neon-colored frozen drinks together in the midst of the Order of Myths’ parade.

"By decree of King Call-a-Cab, king of boozy frozen delights, your presence is requested at [our] annual Carnival convocation to imbibe these colorful confections prepared by our host, Wet William III, Esq.," the MODI official invite states.

All participants are given a button that says "MODI" and the year.

Leadership says they don't know what the future holds.

"Gotta regroup," the founder tells Mobile Mask. "Maybe we'll batch up and drink traditional daiquiris in front of the Wet William's building in honor of our fallen host.

"There is a poetic quality of the finality of the 10th year." by @mobile.mask
