OHR kicked off African Heritage Month over the weekend with @moaa_dc and community members at the DC Unity Soccer Cup!

We had a great time connecting with residents from across DC as teams represented their cultures in a free soccer tournament alongside MPD, strengthening community–law enforcement relationships in our neighborhoods.

To continue our celebration of Black Business Month, the Mayor’s Office on African American Affairs is proud to recognize Sapodilla’s Authentic Caribbean Cuisine, a Black-owned business bringing the flavors of the Caribbean to the Great Ward 8.

Director Snider of the Mayors Office on Caribbean Community Affairs spoke with founder Samantha Abrams to hear the story behind Sapodilla’s, and what it means to build and grow a business in Historic Anacostia.

Inspired by her Guyanese heritage, Sapodilla’s has been serving authentic Caribbean cuisine since 2007. Today, its Ward 8 location continues that legacy while contributing to the growth and vitality of the Anacostia community.

Recently, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy and Initiatives @dcmowpi, the Mayor’s Office on Caribbean Community Affairs @moccadc, and @whuttv, we gathered for an unforgettable screening of ‘A Mother Apart.’

The film struck a deeply personal chord for many of the attendees, especially for one Jamaican mother in attendance, Professor Jean Purchas-Tulloch, who bravely shared how the film felt familiar.

Storytelling and art has the power to make us feel seen. Thank you to everyone who came out to share space and stories with us.

Today, MOCCA proudly honored DC-based leaders who have championed the preservation and education of steelpan music, helping keep this vibrant Caribbean tradition thriving for generations to come.
As part of the celebration, Director Snider presented a proclamation from Mayor Muriel Bowser to Keith Preddie, the only surviving member of the original Trinidad Steelband formed at Howard University in 1957, recognizing his lifelong commitment to cultural preservation, mentorship, and community.
The community also enjoyed beautiful steelpan performances and came together to celebrate the rich cultural legacy and contributions of Caribbean Washingtonians. taken in Ben's Chili Bowl by @moccadc
