Taking it back to Radical Work. 🖤

There is so much that many of us are healing from, collectively and individually.

As we rally against injustice, grieve what has been lost, challenge systems that continue to harm, and try to imagine something better, I keep returning to this poem. It reminds me that healing is not separate from the work. It is the work.

Radical work isn't only found in protests, policy, or public moments. Sometimes it looks like choosing softness after survival. Setting boundaries. Telling the truth. Resting without guilt. Loving ourselves and one another despite everything that insists we shouldn't.

May we continue doing the quiet work and the visible work. The work that transforms us from the inside out.

I hope to see you all August 21st, 2026 from 6:30pm-9:30pm at Bowl Burger Bistro @bowlburgerbistro for an outdoor Mocha Mic with Millie as we continue the radical work of healing, creating, and connecting through our artistry.

On this first day of National Poetry Month 📖✨, I wanted to share my newest piece, “Words.” 🖋️

Poetry has always meant so much to me 🤎. As this piece reflects, I truly believe in the transformative power of words. How they shape us, move us, and connect us in ways that often go beyond explanation 💭🌍.

We witness every day how words can harm and the careless, reckless language that divides and wounds 💔⚡. But we also see the beauty of words. Their ability to empower 💪🏾, to heal 🌱, to inspire ✨, and to serve as a catalyst for change 🔥.

This month, may we all take a moment to reflect on the words we speak, write, and carry within us 💬📝. May we choose them with intention 🎯. May we use them to uplift 🙌🏾, to tell our truths 🗣️, and to create space for others to do the same 🤍🌈.

Happy National Poetry Month 📚🖤

❤️📚 I got to take photos with some truly wonderful people at the inaugural Jersey City Book Fair, and looking back at these moments makes me feel so blessed and grateful!

From our amazing vendors, panelists, and featured performers to the attendees who came out to support us, I’m so thankful for everyone who shared their time, talent, stories, and energy with us. 🥹✨

Creating something from the ground up takes a village, and being surrounded by so many people who believe in the power of books, storytelling, representation, and community means more than words can express.

Thank you for showing up, showing love, and being part of this first chapter. My heart is full, and I’m excited for what’s ahead! ❤️🙌🏾📖

I’m still taking in everything that happened on Saturday through these beautiful photos by Expressions by MowZus, and before anything else, THANK YOU. ❤️

When Marc Polite and I began planning this inaugural event, our mission was to create a free, welcoming celebration of books, literacy, storytelling, and diverse literary voices. A space where authors, readers, families, educators, artists, and community members could come together and see themselves reflected in literature.

And Jersey City showed up! 📚❤️

With 20+ vendors, featured poets, two incredible panels, Story Hour, children’s activities, face painting, community partners, volunteers, and so many attendees, the Bethune Center was filled with books, conversation, creativity, and community.
A huge thank you to our panelists and featured performers:
✨ Adult Panelists: @drsarahlwebb, @meghasworld16, @savagewriter973, @cyngracesylvie & @earthatone

✨ Children’s Panel: Emmelyn Deline, Deborah Oriol, Christy Limbach & Disha Mathur

✨ Featured Poets: Simple N’ Clean (SNC), Ameerah Shabazz, & James C. Ellerbe

Thank you to Ms. Sheena of the West Bergen Branch for bringing Story Hour to our youngest readers, and to the Bethune Center for being our home.

Thank you to @_jcedc & @jerseycityrecreation for your generous swag bags donations.

Greatly appreciate our supporters Office of Cultural Affairs, Shine A Light, JCAC & the Jersey City Arts & Culture Trust Fund, our partners West Bergen Branch Library & The Common Earth Company, and @rotaryjerseycity for your generous donation.

Thank you @bethunecenter for the space & @jc_artandstudiotour for the support.

To every volunteer, thank you for helping with setup, vendors, guests, breakdown, and everything in between!

🎥 Thank you to JPI Films for documenting the day. We can’t wait to see what you captured!
And thank you to everyone who shared, attended, supported our authors and poets, brought your children, purchased books, or simply told a friend.

And, thank you to my co-founder, Marc Polite.
This was our first Jersey City Book Fair, but it is only the beginning. I’m so grateful you all helped bring this vision to life. ❤️📚 taken in The Bethune Center of Jersey City by @mochamicwithmillie

What a night.🌆✨

This past Friday, over 60 of us gathered under the night skies, with the New York City skyline as our backdrop, for a special rooftop edition of Mocha Mic with Millie.

This evening also fell on 25 years since the September 11 attacks. As we acknowledge this history, grieve, and remember, we also gathered to do something that radically helps us through difficult times: come together, create, and celebrate joy through artistry.

We had folks in the building from Philly, Upstate New York, NYC, Long Island, South Jersey, and Delaware! 🤎

A quick thank you to our incredible features:
🎤 @haze_from_statefarm - soulful vocals and energy.
🎤 @36chambersofpoetry - powerful, dynamic poetry.
🎤 @singformevelvet - a beautiful, velvety, soulful voice.

Thank you to @amped_panadas for keeping us fed and Shema for holding down the drinks. 🥟🥤
Thank you Marc, Noel, and Daniel for the heavy lifting and helping with setup and decor, and Elyse and Aareb for helping with setup and the front door. 🤎 Thank you to my husband for being on sound and djing @jyemiproductionsllc

Thank you to Expressions by MowZus for beautifully capturing the night. These photos truly encapsulate the energy. 📸

And thank you to House of Jaigua for the amazing video, we cannot wait to see it all! 🎥 @housejaiguamedia

Most importantly, thank you to @ascentjc for sponsoring this FREE poetic and musical rooftop experience where the community could gather without finances being a barrier to experiencing and celebrating art.

And thank you to @arthouseproductions and JC Fridays for making this evening part of a city-wide celebration of the arts.

The beautiful city backdrop.
The night skies.
The music floating through the air.
The poetry.
The laughter.

Sometimes joy is not an escape from history. Sometimes joy is how we remind ourselves that we are still here, still creating, still connecting, and still making room for one another.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and helped make this night what it was. 🤎

Next month, we’re taking a break, but we’ll be back November 20th for the final Mocha Mic of 2026.

The Tribe of Scribes & Good Vibes continues. 🤎✍🏾🌆✨ taken in Ascent JC by @mochamicwithmillie
