5 VS 5 ISSUE 02

Five fighters apiece. Two rival promoters. One of the biggest boxing events of the decade.

Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren put pride, reputation and promotional supremacy on the line for an unprecedented 5 vs 5 showdown in Riyadh.

For issue 2 of Modern Boxing Journal, Tom Cockram and Mark Robinson took us behind the spectacle, capturing the fighters, the faces and the atmosphere of a defining night for British boxing.

MIKE GOODALL ISSUE 02

Mike Goodall reckons he’s seen more fights than anyone.

The 76-year-old ringmaker and sometime master of ceremonies has watched entire careers unfold from ringside — including Lennox Lewis’s first professional fight and his last. Since a chance call led him to build a ring for Frank Warren in the late 1980s, his work has appeared everywhere from amateur boxing clubs and York Hall to major arenas and Saudi super-fights.

Behind almost every great night of British boxing are people like Mike: the insiders who arrive first, leave last and ensure everything looks the part.

In Issue 02 of Modern Boxing Journal, we meet one of the sport’s most familiar faces — and the man who has spent nearly four decades building the stage on which boxing history is made.

AGON ISSUE 03

Artist @markevans.studio doesn’t paint his fighters. He carves them.

Using blades to etch extraordinarily detailed portraits into leather and vellum, Evans creates boxing art that feels as visceral as the sport itself. Every permanent cut carries risk, precision and controlled violence — qualities he sees reflected in the fighters he depicts.

In Issue 03 of Modern Boxing Journal, Evans discusses his new show, AGON, his childhood fascination with Mike Tyson and the influence of Francis Bacon, George Bellows and Caravaggio on his work.

DYNAMIC DUO ISSUE 03

Before the commentary booths, podcasts and decades spent ringside, Mike Costello and Steve Bunce were sharing fight cards as young boxers in South London.

For Issue 03 of Modern Boxing Journal, two of boxing media’s most respected voices sit down together to revisit their remarkable careers - from unlikely routes into journalism and relationships with Prince Naseem Hamed and Carl Froch, to historic fight nights, Hollywood encounters and a media landscape transformed beyond recognition.

Two friends. Five decades of boxing. More than a few stories to tell.

MOLLY ISSUE 03

For Molly McCann, retirement was never going to mean standing still.

After a decade in MMA, 22 professional bouts and a career that made her a cult figure in the UFC, ‘Meatball’ Molly is returning to where it all began: boxing.

Now signed with Matchroom Boxing and preparing for her professional debut, the Liverpudlian speaks candidly about leaving the Octagon, rebuilding her mental health and choosing the harder road over an easier life outside the ring.

Along the way, there’s therapy, philosophy, a humbling Hyrox and a Mustang-fuelled spell living out her Grand Theft Auto fantasies in Las Vegas.

“I could have been an influencer for a lot more money, but I’m choosing the harder route to the top.”

LEROY NEIMAN ISSUE 01

LeRoy Neiman painted boxing the way it felt from ringside: loud, colourful and full of life.

From sketching Muhammad Ali in his dressing room to creating posters for some of the sport’s biggest fights, Neiman became part of boxing’s inner circle. The art critics didn’t always take him seriously. Fighters and fans did.

For Issue 01 of Modern Boxing Journal, we spoke to Tara Zabor of the LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation about the artist who gave boxing its colour.

RAMLA ISSUE 01

Ramla Ali has never allowed herself to be defined by a single arena. The first boxer to represent Somalia at the Olympic Games, an IMG-signed model and founder of the Sisters Club, her fight extends far beyond the ropes.

For Issue 02 of Modern Boxing Journal, we met our cover star in the raw aftermath of her first professional defeat to discuss resilience, representation, fashion and using her platform to fight for others.

Now, her remarkable story is coming to the screen in the forthcoming film In the Shadows, with @jasminejobson portraying Ramla.

“Your path to success is not smooth, and that’s okay.”
