The Strat is iconic, but Leo missed one detail: wood screws for the neck joint. the neck comes off often for many reasons like shimming, some have the trussrod adjustment at the heel, for fret work etc, with all that on n off, those holes will eventually strip.

This Hendrix anniversary Strat came in with a very loose neck. My guess, they were probably drilled a bit too big from factory? The solution, toothpicks shoved in as a “fix.” That doesn’t work.

Real solutions:
• Redrill & plug with maple
• Threaded inserts + bolts (my go-to: faster, stronger, cleaner)

For vintage pieces I lean more cautious, but for most guitars inserts are the best long-term fix. #modernguitartech #luthier #guitartech #heystewmac by @modernguitartech

I’ve had the extreme honor to be able to work along with @bradclifford this summer. Not only is he one of the best in the biz, but also an extremely humble and kind soul. He’s currently taking care of Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. He showed me this trick the other day and is kindly sharing it with all of us. For any tech out there that’s ever tried to tune an acoustic on a loud and boomy stage knows how extremely difficult it is. His solution? Install a humbucker into a pedal enclosure 🤯! I feel like I’ve seen almost every trick out there but this one blew my mind! Everyone go follow @bradclifford

Ok so what the hell is this thing? It’s called the Bridge Jack. So It lifts the bridge so you can turn the height thumbwheels freely, without string pressure scratching the hardware plating. Set the action in one pass and lock in the height, no guessing and re-checking. It’s also a great fix for bent or worn posts, which show up a lot on vintage instruments and can make the wheels hard to turn. Strong as hell, and it comes with felt pads to protect the top. Definitely one of my favorite setup tools here in the shop and on the road. And guess what guys! @onwrrds just won himself one! Congrats homie!

-Full evaluation done! We agreed on a full setup and a new bone nut. The frets are worn but still have life, so they just need a refresh. A fret level isn’t worth it. I’m confident I can get it playing comfortably until they’re swapped for Freshies.
-Matching pot date codes, plus the volute and pickups, point to 1971. Shout out to @stewmac_guitar for the soldering aids. They were a huge help. Kind of like playing Operation, just with more explicit words 🤬
-Gibson’s “Volute” Experiment
Gibson tried a volute on some necks, and players mostly hated it. It didn’t work. It also marked the Nolan era, when Gibson cut corners with pancake bodies, laminate, and other cheap tricks. all and all, dope vintage guitar.

From a magically dissolving dress to a flower-covered stage, @oliviarodrigo's #TheUnraveledTour is inescapable online. But a single one-of-a-kind creation quickly became part of the visual identity of the tour — a custom-made, pink heart-shaped guitar.

Luis Muñoz (@modernguitartech), a Mexican American guitar technician who operates out of a tiny repair shop in East L.A., built it, but its significance goes beyond the instrument itself.

Olivia Rodrigo has become a major proponent of the guitar since her debut album, 2021’s SOUR, brought her alt-pop-rock musings to the mainstream.

Now, as she kicks off The Unraveled Tour in support of her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, her penchant for unique and highly customized guitars is on full display.

Her arsenal includes a relic’d single-pickup Jazzmaster custom that she uses on the track Maggots for Brains, where she showcases her lead guitar playing.

Another interesting pick comes by way of a heart-shaped guitar crafted by LA guitar repairer and luthier Luis Munoz.

The guitar builder, who counts the Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, and Anthrax among his clients, flexed his skills with this baby pink guitar, which, according to his socials, took a while to build and perfect.

I’ve somewhat retired from touring to be home with mi mija Rosie, but getting to contribute like this? La neta, that means everything. I’m sure Olivia has every guitar company in the world in her DMs, and she still trusted a small shop in East LA 🙏🏽
Five prototypes before I got the body right. It had to look cool, play easy, feel comfortable, and most of all, sound good.
One of one. For now. 👀
Built completely by hand, late nights after shop hours, hecho con un chingo de amor ♥️
Cherry on top: I brought it home before shipping and Rosie didn’t want to give it back 😂 Approved.

This guitar came in with a broken headstock that had already been “fixed” twice before (not by me). Once I got it apart, I found out why nobody wanted this job, a terrible dowel job from a previous repair had basically turned the joint into a mess. It started to separate so they squeezed epoxy in there ins desperate measure to keep it together, and that didn’t work so here we are. Had to route out way more material than a normal headstock repair just to clear out all that old dowel and epoxy
Rebuild process:
-clean as much of the old epoxy and glue
-Epoxy to get the joint solid again
-route 2 maple splines added for strength across the break
-scoop and maple cap on top to tie it all together
-Added a volute, not optional here, too much original wood was already gone from the prior repairs
-New bone nut, hand-shaped and fit
Grateful this one’s back together and stronger than it’s ever been. 🤞🏾 shoutout to the @stewmac_guitar dragon rasp. Couldn’t have done it without you ♥️
