With a heart full of gratitude, I am deeply honoured to be this year’s Invited Artist at the 173rd Annual Open Exhibition of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) in Bristol, UK.
@rwabristol ✨✨
My sincere thanks to the RWA, the Academy’s leadership, the selection panel, and everyone who placed their trust in me and made this opportunity possible. Being part of this exhibition is a great honour and a meaningful responsibility.
One of the greatest discoveries I have made about myself came through running. @hamishyoungart
Running taught me that hard work is not just a quality; it is a way of life.
I learned to stay focused on my own path, without expecting anything from anyone. Just keep moving, one step at a time.
Art is not only something I create; art is a part of who I am. It is where pain finds peace, where suffering finds meaning, and where the soul learns to breathe again.
I believe:Pain creates art. Suffering shapes the human being.
These days, I am working on one of the deepest and most beautiful pieces I have ever created a work that carries my whole heart within it.
This journey has taught me that no dream is beyond reach; when you have the courage to begin, the patience to continue, and the belief to trust yourself.
The journey continues…
And so do I, I keep running,I keep creating.
And every day, I become a better version of myself.

What a day. What an incredible feeling. ✨🤍

11September 2026
Today, I had the honour of seeing my work become part of the 173rd Annual Open Exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol, as this year’s Invited Artist.

One of the most exciting parts of this journey was creating this piece.

A work of this scale was a huge challenge for me — technically, emotionally, and personally. But perhaps that is exactly why it became so important to me.

When I look at it, I imagine myself standing inside a room, slowly pulling the curtains aside and looking through a window.

Outside, I see two horsemen hunting for fish.

A strange, almost dreamlike scene.

And yet, somehow, it carries so much of me.

The Lion and the Sun.☀️
The light.
The yellow.
The movement.
The memories.
The emotions.

All of these elements are pieces of my identity, my experiences and the way I see the world.

I feel that I left a part of myself inside this painting.

Being surrounded today by so many wonderful British artists, and seeing people come to the exhibition with so much love and curiosity, was incredibly special.

And a huge thank you to every curator and every member of the RWA team. Your warmth, energy and the beautiful atmosphere you created made this experience unforgettable. 🤍

I can honestly say this is one of the most exciting exhibitions I have ever been part of.

If you are in Bristol, please go and see it. There is so much beautiful work to discover.

Grateful for this moment.
Grateful for this journey.
And, as always…

I keep running.
I keep creating.
I keep becoming. ✨

Art allows us to carry entire worlds within a single image.

On Tuesday, 3 November 2026, I will return to the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol for a special evening as part of the 173rd Annual Open Exhibition, where I have the honour of being this year’s Invited Artist.

My work, 1001 Nights (2026), draws upon Persian mythology, cultural memory, and the visual language through which I explore identity, history, and imagination.

I have always been fascinated by the ways stories travel across time — how they transform as they pass from one generation to another, and how they continue to shape the way we understand ourselves and the world around us.

Through my practice, I seek to give these stories a new visual life: not simply to revisit the past, but to create a space where memory, heritage, and imagination can exist together.

This upcoming evening is an opportunity to share more about my work, the ideas behind it, and the artistic journey that continues to shape my practice.

I look forward to being back at the RWA and to sharing this conversation with everyone joining us.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN | THE LION AND THE SUN ☀️🦁

In Iranian visual tradition, a curtain is not only something that hides; it can also be a surface for storytelling. In pardeh storytelling, epic and historical images were used to bring stories to life ,a tradition represented today in collections such as the British Museum.

In this work, I have reinterpreted the Lion and the Sun through my own experience. A symbol with a layered history in Iran, the lion becomes, for me, a symbol of freedom.
The scene depicts a hunt: the fish represents a young and vulnerable person becoming the victim of the hunters, while the lion moves towards them, resisting the violence.
The story grew from realities and experiences I have encountered in recent years.
And then there are the red lines.
Because of my physical circumstances, making and transporting my work has always brought challenges. Sometimes gaps appeared between sections of the work. For years, I tried to hide them.
This time, I chose not to.
I gave the gap a colour.
Red.
Now those lines are not imperfections. They are traces of my body, my resistance, and the journey of making this work.
The curtain opens.
The lion resists.
And the red remains.

FROM ARCHIVE TO PERFORMANCE
This work is inspired by the historical painting Female Tumbler, an Iranian Qajar-era work dating to around 1810–1830, which is now held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The painting depicts a female acrobat balancing on her hands a body that is simultaneously performing and being observed.
What drew me to this image was the relationship between body, performance and the gaze.
In my work, rather than directly reproducing the historical image, I reinterpret it through print, transfer, layering, fragmentation and erosion. The two figures are deliberately positioned differently one upright and the other inverted as a way of creating a distance from the original image and reconsidering how the body and the image are seen and represented across time.
For me, print is not simply a technique; it is part of the meaning of the work a way of transmitting an image from the past into the present.
I am not interested in recreating the past, but in exploring how a historical image can be seen and understood again when it enters the present.
Archive, body, performance, memory.
Contemporary work inspired by a historical source / Original Print — 2024

She hides behind the olive tree,
quietly watching the world from behind its branches,
as if no one could see her.
Perhaps hiding is not always about fear.
Sometimes, it is simply a way
to see the world
without being seen by it.

Mohammad Barrangi’s Qajar Series reimagines nineteenth-century Iranian portraiture through his distinctive contemporary practice.

One of the series’ most striking references is Female Tumbler (c. 1800–1830), now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The remarkable Qajar painting depicts a female acrobat mid-handstand—an unusual image of movement, performance and female presence within the visual culture of the period.

Barrangi brings this historical figure into the present through his layered process of printmaking, drawing and collage as he transforms the Qajar figure creating a dialogue between historical representation and contemporary identity.

Works from Barrangi’s Qajar Series are currently on view in A Gaze Through Time: Contemporary Reflections on Memory and History at ADVOCARTSY.

Join us this Saturday, August 29, from 2–4 PM for an EXHIBITION WALKTHROUGH and a closer look at the histories and artistic processes behind the works.

On view through September 26

Hand Dancer
This image is based on an artwork titled “Acrobat Lady,” a Persian painting from the Qajar period, dating approximately to 1228 AH (1813–1814 CE). The work is described as being executed in gouache, watercolor, and gold on paper, measuring approximately 38.1 × 24.77 cm, and held in the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas, United States.

It seems likely that this image was also inspired by or derived from this source.🤍✨

One of the most extraordinary moments I have experienced over the years is removing the final layer of a work. It feels like lifting a veil, as if an unseen beauty has been waiting all along to reveal itself. The touch of the paper as it slowly separates from the surface is a quiet kind of magic.
🪄✨..
I love this process, despite its demands—despite the calluses on my hands and every bit of effort it requires. Because beauty, in the end, always reveals itself.
