I can’t remember ever having a day as joyous as yesterday. Arohanui to every single person who came down ❤️🤍🖤 I have to mihi to those behind the scenes: the incredible whatu kākahu I wore was made by multi-mana artist Lyss @gods_eyeball who I’m lucky to have onboard as a stylist. I’m super lucky to have worked with Offline Collective on previous collabs and Sam @offline.mov delivered the amazing visuals on the day bringing the Mokotron universe into Te Ao Mārama. The whānau @lanewayfestnz were the embodiment of manaaki, tēnā koutou! @rip9lives set the kaupapa, reminding me and Samara it was just a party and we were there to have fun, shot cuzzies 🫡 @caru_xo provided two of the illest riddims of my set, the producers producer 🔥 Taking the stage with my fav singer @samara.alofa just changed the whole dynamic from scary to fun. We agreed we would not say a single word to the audience and let the music speak for itself. Nek minute. @sunreturn.nz rō whare ☀️And fuck David Seymour Ake Ake Ake 🥰 by @mokotron

Another life dream fulfilled, I don’t think I’m the only one who’s been waiting for the call up to Te Whenua Moemoea all their life. Naarm that was crazy, what a city! One big outdoor gallery, the baddest kai, drinkable tap water, cloudy apple juice was off the chain, Stalactites Gyros at 11pm will ruin kebabs for me forever, likewise the Ban Mi in Footscray. A really magic moment happened in the puoro workshop when the first person to make their puoro sing was a tiny little kōtiro. Mauri ora @kahumuru_ and @mols_esme for the manaaki. Big up @section8melbourne, shot Hamish and all the staff. 1991, up to wearing an AFL cap, I’ve come a long way lol. I’m actually stoked to be nominated for an @apraamcosnz Silver Scroll. Seeing Che Fu being recognised in 2002 feels like a core memory. We submitted this even though remixes don’t qualify so this feels like a win for the culture. Awesome to see so many of the most talented songwriters in the country being nominated too: @maaofficialmusic @hinabeaming @greatsouthgreat LEAO @noa.records @devamahal @geneva_am . Who knew I’d ever be saying this: Waerea has just been repressed for a FOURTH TIME 🤯 😮 It’s such a weird niche album: is it niche? That niche doesn’t even exist. Maybe it’s an outlier. Mihi rau to Border Music and Stebbing Recording Centre for making this happen and mihi mutunga kore to all the amazing record stores for stocking this weird album. Hey so Waerea had seven tracks: I’ve got seven tracks done for the new album with more coming so hopefully the next pressing will be a first pressing. Arohanui whānau ❤️🤍🖤 by @mokotron

So this is the story. Three years ago I did a gig in Wellington, it was my third ever performance. I was treated poorly by the promoter. Worse, I was pushed to the back of the stage so I could barely see the audience and couldn’t hear the monitor. It was pretty heartbreaking being unable to perform properly in front of two of my biggest influences: Rob Thorne and Te Kupu. At that point I decided I would boycott Wellington: that’s why I don’t perform there. It’s crazy though: almost all the artists I work with are from Te Whanganui a Tara. I did a tee shirt run earlier this year and it was basically a list of suburbs in Welli: it made me think I should just get over it and come visit the whānau down there. I reached out to Young Ghost and he had my flights booked that night. I’m performing at Cuba Dupa this Saturday 28th on Valhalla Stage Outside, 6:55 to 7:35 pm. Kia ora whānau! I’m playing a live to air on @95bfm this Thursday from 9:30 am to 9:55 am. It’s a collaboration with @carharttwip and their Audio Archives project. In the spirit of ‘work in progress’ it’ll be a set of my new album, all works in progress, demos, rough drafts, random remixes. One of the tunes is so new I only finished the demo last night. I’m sick to death of the Waerea album so this will be my first set almost completely Waerea free. If I blow any subs, apologies in advance. The mixes are WIP.
