Postcards from Maine now that the film is back. 💌🌲
A few takeaways from my time at Hewnoaks:

Solitude and silence are only scary because they’re underdeveloped. Spending time with myself was a bit like wandering a garden at night and letting my eyes adjust. A severely underrated practice, knowing the sound of your own voice.

The muse is a neighborhood cat. You can’t chase her or control her, but you can create a space and let her come to you. You get to rub her belly when she feels safe.

Pretty sure ghosts like folk music.

Blackberry blossoms are my favorite flower.

One last post for Ireland.🍀 And I think this one deserves an explanation. I don’t think travel is virtuous or automatically makes you interesting, but I do feel that this journey was monumental for me.
Most of us in the states come from a lineage of those who left their homelands, many for good reason. A nation of leavers nonetheless. I grew up glorifying the open road, the lone ranger, the free thinker. How little we’ve been taught to know or revere the actual place we call home. We dismiss Indigenous relationships with the land here as archaic, as though science has proved the world inanimate and the Christian God is at odds with a world that speaks (read: rocks cry out, talking donkeys.)
Studying and gratefully getting the chance to visit the homelands of my own bloodline has opened me up to an understanding that my own lineage held this same reverence. Yours too. This is a lens available to all of us.
The most beautiful and hopeful part of this is recognizing I can bring it back with me to the place I now call home. That while my relationship with Oregon may not be directly inherited, it can be fostered as any relationship, seeing myself not as an individual floating in space, but a member of a community that does not stop at humans or even animals.
It is easy to plunder and kill when you don’t see divinity in creation. It is easy to protect and nurture when you do.
