From 5 BCE to 300 CE, the ancient Greeks built over 300 Dream Incubation temples along the Aegean Sea. They believed the healing god Asklepios would visit them in their sleep and deliver medicinal messages. Today, we know that god is a symbol for the Self — our subconscious speaking to us through dreams. And that dreaming is a 24/7 practice, an all-day art — as this conversation with Psyche extends through our days via imagination, daydreams, desires, whims, and fancies. The ancient Greeks courted these muses and messages through swims in the sea, movement, meditation, stillness, music, poetry, and long meals in community — surrounded by rolling hills and cypress forests. The temples had some of the largest amphitheaters in the world — to stoke catharsis. The simple idea we’ve lost is this: all that creativity and clarity we search for in the external world can be found in an inner world. And the entrance to this place can be found through stillness, silence, wonder and awe. We hosted a Dream Incubation retreat on the Turkish island of Bozcaada and can confidently confirm this liminal land exists. You can dream from anywhere — but it’s a pretty special week to do it in the same place as the ancient Greeks, with the best @incubatio team and our brilliant friends who helped us ~revive this ancient art. Special thanks to @mgodoynieto who painted our group dreaming sessions each morning — funny to think we started talking about dreams 7 years ago in BK. I used to think creativity was a hard-earned skill measured by an external score. I’ve learned this last year that it is a very soft, very beautiful, eternal return.
