We WENT OUT. 😂 @serialkillerspeakeasy visited Bridgeport and we learned lesser-known facts about four serial killers — Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer & John Wayne Gacy — while sipping on specifically-curated cocktails in a theater.

The actors, who were also our servers, are so talented and this was honestly a blast. A little macabre? Yes. A little weird for us to travel to Bridgeport on a Saturday? Yes. Absolutely worth it. (Best date, too. ❤️) taken in Bridgeport, Connecticut by @mollyyanity

I’m breaking a rule. I typically… no, I NEVER have enough time to read for fun during the academic year.

I read a ton during this time, and sometimes it is fun, or fascinating, or enlightening, but it is WORK. Example: I just read Mary Beard’s “Women and Power: A Manifesto.” It is going to be at the heart of a big research project. It was great, but it is heady, and full of big ideas, and passages need to be read and reread with specific ideas in mind. Right? It is work; it isn’t breezy, or emotional, or something I aspire to do at the end of a busy day. Alas, reading for pleasure gets squeezed out.

But I have had this book, “Theo of Golden,” on reserve from the library for a couple months. It arrived Thursday — yes, even the large print edition took this long! It has been recommended to me from near and far. And now it is here… right as I’m about the busiest as I’ll be all year.

Creating an exam, finishing lectures, getting an IRB application in, preparing for a research trip to London, and the endless advising/form-signing turnstile that is my college’s way have me completely behind.

But, this book arrived and I’m making time because there is almost nothing better than a wonderful book. by @mollyyanity

Some of our SMC freshmen, URI 101 mentors and director @mollyyanity made the trip to Boston Wednesday evening to take in a @redsox game and have a little fun.

We met up with Sox sales associate @kyle_levasseur, whose career in sports originally took him to West Virginia, where he was a sportscaster, then to Stamford, Connecticut where he won two Emmys as part of NBC Sports’ Olympic production teams. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience and advice with us, Kyle.

Students got to experience a raucous wave 😂, sang “Sweet Caroline” and even got a 1-0 Sox win. Not a bad night! taken in Fenway Park, Home Of The Red Sox by @mollyyanity

This Monday’s bowl is a Korean chicken bowl from @damn_delicious. Grilled chicken thighs marinated in gochujang, grated pear 🍐, ginger, soy sauce and more. I eliminated about half the oil the recipe called for and it was perfect. Brown rice, kimchi, carrots, slaw (since the grocery was out of red cabbage), green onions, cilantro and a jammy egg. Chef’s kiss!

Every Monday is a super bowl Monday here. And we are getting creative! Korean chicken, spicy shrimp, traditional ahi, salmon tartare, baked salmon, teriyaki chicken… if you have recipe suggestions, share them here. taken in West Haven, Connecticut by @mollyyanity

This is one of the nicest gifts I’ve ever received and I want to tell you about it.

It is an illustrated book completely in Russian from my colleague, @masha_grover.

Now, I don’t speak a lick of Russian, and I definitely can’t read it. But, last year, I mentioned in passing that one of my all-time favorite books is “We” by Yvegeny Zamyatin. It is an early dystopian novel from the 1920s, preceding books like Orwell’s “1984” and Huxley’s “Brave New World.” But it wasn’t published in Soviet Russia until the late 1980s.

I read the book when I was in college — specifically in Dr. Mike McKinney’s “World Authors” literature course … or something like that. It was literally 30 or 31 years ago! But here is what I remember most: I remember Dr. McKinney first telling us about the author’s life and political beliefs. I remember getting into the reading — and it was a little hard to follow, this glass world (surveillance), and a green wall, and sex only for breeding, and a mathematician working on a rocket ship, and an edgy rebellious woman — but it was fascinating.

Then, in one of the most memorable experiences of my academic life, I remember going to a coffeeshop in downtown San Diego to study for the exam on the book with classmates. We had several questions to explore and, as we got deeper into them, we pivoted. We decided to go decorate the courtyard of Taylor Hall like the scenes in the book and put together physical symbols of the answers we were probing.

I have no idea how I did on the exam, don’t even remember how I did in the class, to be honest. (Probably well because I liked it so much.) But it was such a meaningful experience, and an equally important book. Something I have never forgotten.

Then today, Dr. Grover gave me the book. I don’t recognize a word, but the illustrations bring back those images I recall of the story and the memories I made so long ago.

I know @jayra4usall and @chitaitaijess were in that class with me. I hope they enjoy this as much I do.

Maria, thank you for such a thoughtful, meaningful gift. It means so much to me and I am truly moved. by @mollyyanity
