POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Some of our SMC freshmen, URI 101 mentors and director @mollyyanity made the trip to Boston Wednesday evening to take in a @redsox game and have a little fun.

We met up with Sox sales associate @kyle_levasseur, whose career in sports originally took him to West Virginia, where he was a sportscaster, then to Stamford, Connecticut where he won two Emmys as part of NBC Sports’ Olympic production teams. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience and advice with us, Kyle.

Students got to experience a raucous wave 😂, sang “Sweet Caroline” and even got a 1-0 Sox win. Not a bad night!

Professor @mollyyanity had a co-authored article published this week in the @sage_publishing journal “Communication & Sport.”

The piece is entitled “Conceptualizing ‘Gal Culture’: The Limits of Neoliberal Feminism as an Antidote to Bro Culture on The RE–CAP Show” and it analyzes the women’s soccer podcast, which is hosted by former USWNT stars Tobin Heath and Christen Press.

Today we had the chance to visit the Irish Emigration Museum and it was one of the most interesting experiences I’ve had in Dublin so far.

The museum does a great job of telling the stories of Irish people who left Ireland and made an impact all around the world whether that be in sports, politics, science, and music it was really cool seeing how Irish culture has influenced so many different places as well as learning about popular celebrities like Rihanna having Irish descent in her family as well as President Obama also having Irish descent .

One thing I enjoyed was how interactive everything was. Instead of just reading information on walls, there were videos, touchscreens, and exhibits that made the stories feel much more personal and engaging. I enjoyed the table touch screen were I was able to see historical footage and history about different athletes with Irish descent or from Ireland and athletes who contributed to their respective sports.

Definitely a place I would recommend checking out if you’re visiting Dublin and want to learn more about Ireland’s history and global influence. ☘️

Today we took a trip and got to tour the Sport Ireland Campus in Blanchardstown, Dublin. The campus is the heartbeat of Irish sport, where elite performance, community athletics, and everyday recreation all come together. They train a range of athletes from the Olympic level to youth programs, making it one of the most important sports and training facilities in Ireland.

The facilities were massive, with everything from basketball and tennis courts to outdoor pitches for sports like rugby, soccer, and Gaelic games. There were high performance gyms, indoor training spaces, and multipurpose areas used for training, recovery, events, and education. We also got to see the show jumping area, where riders and horses train through different obstacle courses and practice at a competitive level.

We also had the opportunity to sit down with Peter Sherrard, CEO of the Olympic Federation of Ireland, and learn more about the work happening behind the scenes of Irish Olympic sport. He spoke about helping lead the federation through major growth, including a rebrand, new sponsorships, expanded partnerships in sports science, and the continued development of Team Ireland. We also got insight into the financial side of the federation, including the costs involved in supporting Olympic athletes and how funding is managed across the organization. Pretty cool experience!

It was a great time getting to see the facilities up close and learn more about the work that goes into supporting Irish athletes and sport. #sportirelandcampus @worldstrides_ireland

On the third day of the two week URI Sports Media abroad program to Dublin our group went to Croke Park. The home of the Gaelic Athletic Association, a community driven sports organization that rules over four traditional Irish sports that are played across the world. These sports are Hurling Handball, Gaelic Football, Rounders. We started with a tour of Croke Park. We learned about the history of the GAA and the Park itself. The Park continues to stay in the same spot that it has been in since it opened in 1913 despite maximizing its capacity to 80,000 seats with the demand for more. The main reason behind this is to remember the history behind the location and to remember those who died there during “Bloody Sunday” on 21 Nov 1920 where 14 people died including Michael Hogan a player who was shot while trying to flee the field. There is now a grandstand in the park that is in his name to honor his life. We were able to sit in that section and hear the history of what happened on that tragic day. This small but major part of the GAA’s history reflects the entire organization’s values, conscious commitment to community as well as upholding Gaelic tradition and language. As a democratic organization all of their members have a vote in every action that the organization takes. To me it is impressive the dedication that the “amateur”, non-paid, players all have to the organization from children to the top players giving close if not more than 20 hours a week to the sports that the GAA rules over. The organization turns down opportunities to make more money so they can follow what the majority in the organization want and to uphold the traditions as well as the values that the organization was built on starting as an uprising to the English oppression of the Natives of Ireland. #uri #dublin #GAA #gaamuseumtours @uriharringtonschool @uri_sportsmedia @mhodler @mollyyanity @worldstrides_ireland

Special thanks to @howardbryantbooks — and to the students who asked great questions — for joining us on campus this week for the second annual Home Team Speakers Series event and in select classes.

The Emmy Award-winning documentarian, author and journalist spoke about his new book “Kings and Pawns: Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson in America,” athletes and activism and more.

It was our honor and privilege.

Let it be known: Quinnipiac Women's Rugby is unrivaled. Working within this program, alongside @tfcoachcarlson and her staff, and on behalf of the student-athletes that showed up every day profoundly changed me. The words culture and development are thrown around in excess and without action but these people and this program lived it and prioritized it.

May we continue to make noise, take up space, and believe that better is attainable. @qurugby @quathletics @quinnipiacu
