Minnette Lehmann Memorial Celebration Sunday 11/15/26 @thelabsf 2948 16th St. SF, CA 94103

Doors: 12noon Program: 1pm Open mic: 2pm
Emcee–Kathy Brew Music– Richard Marriott

The Bay Area art community mourns the loss of Minnette Lehmann, feminist artist, intellectual, educator, mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend to many, who passed in June just shy of her 98th birthday. Minnette was deeply dedicated to The Lab, participating as a curator, artist, and serving as a member of the Board of Directors for 20 yrs.

Please gather with us for a memorial celebration of Minnette’s extraordinary life, art, sharp wit, dry humor, and indelible legacy. Everyone is welcome. (Streaming option in works.)

Pls RSVP at link in comments if you would like to join virtually.

About Minnette
Since the 1940s, Lehmann was at the forefront of important Bay Area intellectual and artistic movements. She hosted countless artists, thinkers, and art-world gatherings at her San Francisco home and enchanting garden overlooking the Bay.

An embodiment of the “wild woman” archetype, she challenged and redefined domestic and artistic institutions for women, expanding possibilities through photography, performance art, collage, and painting. Her groundbreaking photographic series Trouble in Paradise documented a pivotal moment in American history when marriage itself became problematic. She received a NEA grant for the work.

Over a 20-year teaching career at SFSU, the SFAI, and UC Ext, she mentored generations of artists while continually evolving her own practice. Her work, which processed personal triumphs and tragedies while offering fierce critiques of patriarchal culture, is held in collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Her papers will be archived at the SF Public Library.

We invite you to share photos, videos of Minnette at link in comments to share at the gathering.

ONE LAST RACKET!
Join us this Saturday, October 17, for the Performance Festival + Exhibition Closing of A Racket of Banshees: Goddesses and Monsters Re-Imagined at Los Angeles Valley College Art Gallery!
The Association of Hysteric Curators brings together feminist artists working across performance, painting, sculpture, video, and installation to challenge traditional representations of goddesses, monsters, and the unruly feminine.
Our closing festival celebrates the power of performance as a form of resistance, transformation, and collective expression. Through ritual, storytelling, humor, movement, and the body, participating artists explore new ways to make feminist voices visible and heard.
The photographs featured here capture moments from our previous performances, offering a glimpse into the range of voices, perspectives, and practices that make this collective so dynamic.
This is your last chance to experience our traveling works-on-paper exhibition at LAVC and join us for an afternoon of live performance. We hope to see you there!

#indigenouspeoplesday #nurturing I wrote this in 2022 after driving from CA to NY, to CO, to TX…: As always, when making road trips over vast American landscapes, being a #psychicmedium I feel the spirits of people indigenous to this land. Sometimes whole scenes hit my mind’s eye. I often feel waves of loss... of life, ways for land-stewardship for healthy ecosystems, and loss of the #respectforanimals.

I feel invasion, exploitation, and domination; of nature, animals and women, and how these have continued as cultural proclivities which are rapidly and adversely impacting the earth’s biosphere.

The latter I always relate to my own health struggles. We are the Earth; Gaia Theory.

Words fail to depict the impressions of all that was lost. I don’t usually speak of this publicly, but here we are so close to the climate crises’s apex, so what is the use of hiding anymore what patriarchal colonial biases dismiss & trivialize, like psychic visions. These racist, supremacist, misogynistic biases are what have led us to this juncture of a failing biosphere.

I bust these cultural biases in my art, yet have a disconnect being publicly “out” as a medium/psychic. In the art world & our culture in general, I have been trained to hide these skills from the dominant view. #decolonizeme

We visited earth power spot Capulin Vocano in NM, and a preserved basically ‘dinosaur highway’ of footprint fossils in Clayton. Coupled with bones & more @perotmuseum of Nature & Science, it all left me thinking about extinction...

...and nurturing.

Yes, nurturing another quality patriarchal culture categorizes as lesser than its opposite: conquering.

We passed the historical site of Maryann Goodnight whose compassion and nurturance answered the calls of crying Buffalo calves whose mothers had been slaughtered by the colonizers for hides without regard for their dependents.

This dominating culture clear-cuts forests vs strategic pruning, leaving the forest without the elder trees to coach the younger saplings how to survive drought, etc., making the forests unhealthy. If it were not for her care, it is said the buffalo species would not have survived. by @monetclark

Thank you ❤️ all you gorgeous people for the kind support and acknowledgment on my ER post. I want these autoimmune neuro-inflammatory diseases, ME/CFS, and MCAS aka Environmental Illness, to be stripped of their stigma, which is why I sometimes go public with my plight.

These illnesses first hit me in the early 90s when I was 24, right as the HIV crisis was peaking. Yet, while activists were rallying to help people with AIDS, those of us with this other epidemic—life-threateningly ill, chronically ill, and mostly women—remained completely marginalized.

In fact, ME/CFS was not federally validated or funded for research until 2015! Everyone living with it has suffered horribly because of that systemic neglect.

Against all odds, I got better after 12 years the first time around. I know I will heal again from this current relapse, even though COVID, mold, and toxic fire/particulate exposures have severely revved up my inflammatory response. It’s a brutal rollercoaster, but I will make it through.

Update, ER visit again. I was staying with a friend in North Malibu when I was violently woken up by a severe, systemic #MCAS crisis (pre-anaphylaxis). It turns out another Santa Clarita fire is blowing heavy smoke and particulate right to where I was. The ER doctor put me on a course of steroids again, to get this yet another acute flare under control.

While steroids aren’t ideal, I am incredibly well-supported by my medical team. My Tibetan doctor educated in Lhasa, whose family has treated the Dalai Lamas for generations has me on a protective herbal protocol to shield my organs and bones from the steroid side effects. At the same time, my Chinese acupuncturist—who has 11 years of formal university medical training in China and is a researcher at UCLA—is completely in support of combining these emergency steroids with my protective herbs and his electro-acupuncture treatments.

I’m also gaining a lot of traction using vagal nerve breath-work. Mast cells literally come undone during a flare, and this specific breath-work releases acetylcholine to physically put a break on the chemical storm they release which causes all the symptoms, and stabilize the cells.

Rebounding is definitely harder this time around with the added complications of #longcovid , and how common it is to come across toxic fire smoke and particulate, plus toxic mold exposure, and being older. When I successfully brought my ME/CFS and MCAS (as diagnosed by UCLA Immunology due to high Leukotrienes and formally referred to as environmental illness) into remission years ago, I didn’t have these extra layers to contend with.

The good news is that I just won my mold lawsuit! I am using the settlement money to build a custom specialty ADU using #Baubiology (Building Biology) standards. It will be completely free of toxic VOCs, built to prevent mold, and equipped with a super-filtration system to keep wildfire smoke and particulates out.

#Climatechange #fire makes recovery harder, but I have more tools than most however, and with housing on the horizon and my incredible team, I’ll come out stronger. by @monetclark
