At Monterr Laboratory & Studio (@monterr_lab) in Mexico City, design begins with a living material.

Founded by Federico Herrera and Maria Monteys, Monterr works with mycelium not as a substitute, but as a collaborator. In their lab, bricks, lighting, packaging, and interior elements grow from a process shaped by humidity, time, and care. Each piece is less a finished object and more a record of an ongoing exchange between designer and organism.

What emerges is a different way of thinking about materials and responsibility. One where design responds to living systems, where waste is reconsidered, and where the future is informed by ancient knowledge already embedded in nature.

Contributing editor Ana Velasco sat down with the founders to discuss process, authorship, and what it means to build with something alive.

Antes de ser objeto, aquí hay entorno: humedad, tiempo y espera. @monterr_lab propone una estética sin control total, una colaboración con lo vivo, donde el diseño no impone, escucha. Micelio como piel, hongos como estructura, como una nueva manera de pensar lo que tocamos y lo que desechamos.

Paneles Acústicos Bio-Fabricados x @monterr_lab en COM BIO UNIT 3 WAY EXTERIOR SPEAKER para @kurimanzutto

En el interior, se integran paneles de micelio —la matriz estructural de los hongos— cultivados a partir de residuos agrícolas y del hongo Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum).

Este bio-compuesto actúa como un material acústico natural con propiedades hidrofóbicas.
