The Materia Archive 2025 grew from a question that has quietly shaped our thinking over time: what truly matters.

Across ten conversations with designers and architects working across craft, architecture, and design, themes of material, ritual, intuition, and nature emerge as ways of paying attention. These practices speak about listening to materials, honoring process, and allowing instinct to guide decisions alongside discipline.

Collected from interviews originally published on materia.press, this annual printed volume gathers these voices into a physical record of ideas shaping contemporary design.

A document of work rooted in substance, care, and presence.

Limited edition of 250 hand-numbered copies.

Produced in partnership with @hermes

Fungi have been here far longer than we have. At Monterr Laboratory & Studio ( @monterr_lab ) in Mexico City, that ancient intelligence becomes the foundation for a new material future.

Founded by Federico Herrera and Maria Monteys, Monterr develops mycelium-based bricks, packaging, interior finishes, and architectural elements designed to replace single-use systems built for seconds of use and centuries of impact.

Working at the intersection of research, industry, and design, they are translating living organisms into scalable solutions without sacrificing aesthetics.

Contributing Editor Ana Velasco speaks with the founders about collaboration, standardization, and what it takes to build with something alive.

At Monterr Laboratory & Studio (@monterr_lab) in Mexico City, design begins with a living material.

Founded by Federico Herrera and Maria Monteys, Monterr works with mycelium not as a substitute, but as a collaborator. In their lab, bricks, lighting, packaging, and interior elements grow from a process shaped by humidity, time, and care. Each piece is less a finished object and more a record of an ongoing exchange between designer and organism.

What emerges is a different way of thinking about materials and responsibility. One where design responds to living systems, where waste is reconsidered, and where the future is informed by ancient knowledge already embedded in nature.

Contributing editor Ana Velasco sat down with the founders to discuss process, authorship, and what it means to build with something alive.

SARAVIA Bacanora 100 - Led by Ernesto Rivas my cousin, my brother and someone with whom I share a deep vision of Mexico: its land, its rituals, and the importance of honoring where we come from.

This bacanora is more than a drink. It’s an invitation. An invitation to sit together, slow down, and create space for meaningful conversations between women.

From the bottle to the packaging, every element was designed with intention. The packaging was developed in collaboration with Monterr, made entirely from our own agave bagasse transforming what remains into something new, circular, and alive.

At LS, I’ve always believed that design should accompany real moments in women’s lives.

This project transforms tradition into a moment of awakening, where real connection begins.
