I’ve been working on OTR Grotesk for quite some time now and have learnt a looot along the way. Constantly being improved for the use in our design studio @atelierpol and supported by the @bernerdesignstiftung it’s now release time!

The typeface will be shown at this year’s Bestform exhibtion alongside design price winner @binnenland_typefaces and other type design related work from @automaticostudio / @demian.conrad/ @arnaud_chemin, @massimiliano_________audretsch, and @emphase_lausanne_bern / @fabienne_kilchoer

We reached the point where nothing you see and read on a device is real anymore.

Images taken with a state-of-the-art smartphone not only get enhanced through filters to make them look “good”. AI is sloppily retracing texts, smudging the background material along the way if necessary, or just bluntly adding design elements to make text appear sharper or with more contrast.

Search engines like Google will upscale even decent-sized images with AI algorithms, and rather leave you with bizarrely deformed faces than a pixelated image in the search results preview.

And as a result we reached the point where people scream “fake” and “AI” at real things, like actual human beings achieving the impossible, or nature which never ceases to amaze us.

We reached the point where big companies switch their employees‘ cars to electric, while at the same time teaching them to use AI for the most simple tasks, without drawing attention to sustainability.

We reached the point where the biggest companies can create AI slop campaigns on the back of the work of real creatives.

And we reached the point where thousands of men safely engage in chat groups, where they post and freely exchange deepfake pornographic material of women.

—
Don’t get me wrong: let’s embrace new technologies, and use AI to a meaningful extent to outsource tedious tasks, and to improve our existing skills.

I‘m obsessed with numbers and grids and this is reflected in my first completed typeface OTR Grotesk.
The core design follows strict rules based on the unit 8 and everything is meticulously elaborated to the last detail.

Have you designed with 8 as a base unit yourself, or do you know any (mathematical) fun facts about the number? 😋
