What kind of response would you want from your principal? 💚

The Social Discipline Window gives us four ways of responding when behaviour challenges us:

TO — Control without support. “Because I said so.”

FOR — Support without control. “It’s okay, don’t worry about it.”

NOT — Neither support nor control. Silence, avoidance, disengagement.

WITH — Both support and control. “I care about you, and this needs to be addressed — together.”

Now read those responses again, but imagine your principal saying them to you.

Which one would make you feel heard, supported, and still accountable?

The goal isn’t to remove expectations or avoid difficult conversations. It’s to hold people accountable while keeping connection at the centre.

💬 Which approach do you think builds the strongest relationships?

Save this post — we’ll be exploring each approach in more detail.

Kindness is more than being nice. 💚

When students feel safe, they’re better able to connect, participate, and learn.

And that sense of safety often starts with the smallest moments:
✨ Greeting a student by name.
✨ Noticing their effort.
✨ Giving them the benefit of the doubt.
✨ Showing patience when they’re struggling.

These moments might seem small, but they can shape how a student feels about themselves, their teacher, and their place in the classroom.

We don’t always see the impact of our kindness right away. But the way we make students feel matters.

Connection creates the conditions for learning.

💬 What’s one small act of kindness a teacher showed you that you still remember?

Where does the Social Discipline Window come from, and why does it matter? 💡

The Social Discipline Window is rooted in restorative justice theory, developed by Paul McCold and Ted Wachtel (2002).

It helps us understand how we respond when someone we’re responsible for does something we didn’t want them to do.

Whether you’re supporting a student, leading a team, or navigating family relationships, two questions can change your approach:

✨ How much control are we using?
✨ How much support are we offering?

This framework isn’t just for classrooms. It invites all of us to reflect on how we balance clear expectations with meaningful support.

In the next posts, we’ll explore the four approaches: TO, FOR, NOT, and WITH.

💬 Where do you think you tend to lean when you’re under pressure?

Do people feel lighter or heavier after speaking with you? 💚

An illuminator is someone who makes others feel seen, heard, and valued. Someone who brings curiosity instead of criticism, hope instead of hopelessness, and calm instead of chaos.

You don’t have to be perfect to be an illuminator. Sometimes, it starts with simply noticing the energy you bring into a room and choosing to make others feel a little lighter.

A beautiful reminder to carry into our classrooms, conversations, and everyday relationships.

What are you leaving people with today?

And thank you to Sarie for sharing this concept. ✨

A student challenges your instruction. What happens next? 💚

When behavior gets difficult, our responses often fall into familiar patterns.

We might tighten control.
We might step in and fix everything.
We might withdraw because we’re overwhelmed.
Or we might work with the student to find a way forward.

The Social Discipline Window helps us understand these different approaches through two questions:

How much control are we using? And how much support are we offering?

The restorative approach isn’t about being permissive or letting behavior go unchecked. It’s about combining clear expectations with support, connection, and accountability.

And the same framework can help us reflect on how we lead adults, support colleagues, and navigate difficult conversations.

💬 Which approach do you find yourself reaching for when you’re under pressure: TO, FOR, NOT, or WITH?

There’s no need to get it perfect. Awareness is a place to start.

If a student made a mistake, fell behind, or struggled to get something right, would you ask, “What’s wrong with you?”

Probably not.

You’d offer patience. You’d help them understand what happened. You’d remind them that struggling doesn’t make them a failure.

But when it’s you who’s struggling, do you offer yourself that same compassion?

As educators, we spend so much time supporting others that we can forget we need support, too.

The next time you make a mistake or feel like you’re not doing enough, pause and ask yourself:

“What would I say to a student I deeply care about right now?”

Then try saying those words to yourself.

You deserve the same patience, understanding, and kindness you give so freely to others.

💾 Save this for the days when your inner critic gets loud.

💬 Is it easier for you to show compassion to others than to yourself?

What if you approached next year with one intention instead of a long list of goals? 💚

You don’t need a twelve-page plan to make meaningful changes.

Maybe your word is steady — to find more consistency without rushing.

Maybe it’s lighter — to release what you’re no longer meant to carry.

Maybe it’s connected — to make more room for relationships that matter.

Or perhaps it’s brave, curious, calm, or enough.

One word can become a gentle reminder of how you want to feel, lead, and show up for yourself and others.

As you look toward next year, ask yourself: What do I want more of, and what am I ready to let go of?

Sometimes kindness sounds like:
“I can’t take that on right now.”
“I want to help, but I don’t have the capacity today.”
“I need to protect my time so I can show up well.”

You can care deeply about others without making yourself available for everything.

Because kindness isn’t saying yes at the expense of your own wellbeing. It’s being honest about what you can give, without losing compassion for the people asking.

Sometimes, the kindest thing you can do is say no—with clarity, respect, and no need to apologise for being human.

💬 Do you find it harder to say no at work or in your personal life?

💾 Save this as a reminder that boundaries and compassion can coexist.

“Nobody listens to me.”

Sometimes, the words we hear are only part of the story. 💚

Beneath that frustration might be a need to feel heard, to be included in decisions, or to know that your perspective matters.

In schools and workplaces, it’s easy to respond to the complaint without exploring what’s driving it.

What if, instead of becoming defensive or jumping straight to solutions, we got curious?

Try asking:
“What would help you feel heard right now?”

You don’t have to guess what someone needs. You just have to make room to understand.

Because better conversations don’t always start with the right answer. Sometimes, they start with a better question.

💬 When someone says, “Nobody listens to me,” what do you think they might need most?

💾 Save this as a reminder for your next difficult conversation.

Every school has an illuminator. 💚

The person who makes hard days feel a little lighter. Who brings calm when things feel overwhelming, creates safety when it’s needed most, or reminds others that there’s still hope.

And often, they have no idea how much their presence matters.

So here’s your reminder: Tell them.

Before today ends, send that message. Let them know what they’ve meant to you. A few words from you might mean more than you realize.

✨ Who’s been an illuminator in your life? Tag them or send them this as a little reminder.

Your words can create distance—or open the door to connection. 💚

“I feel frustrated” expresses a feeling.

“You never listen” makes a judgment about someone else.

One shares your experience. The other can leave someone feeling blamed or defensive.

Try naming what you feel before labeling what someone else does. It can make more room for understanding, honest conversations, and stronger relationships.

Which do you reach for when you’re frustrated: a feeling or a judgment? ⬇️

💾 Save this as a reminder for your next difficult conversation.
📤 Share it with someone who values connection over blame.

You don’t have to earn your rest. 💚

You’ve been carrying students, families, behaviors, meetings, and expectations for a long time.

You deserve rest before you reach burnout—not just after.

A rested educator has more room to pause, connect, and respond with intention.

Rest isn’t quitting.
It isn’t giving up.
It’s part of how you keep going.

Let this be your reminder to stop treating rest like a reward.

💾 Save this for the days you feel guilty slowing down.
📤 Share it with an educator who needs permission to rest.
