Two weeks until the Shebandowan Smallmouth Showdown.

For Back 40 Baits, this tournament is part of our story.

We’ve spent years competing on this lake, and every windy point, rock pile, tough bite, and heavy weigh-in has taught us something. Those lessons show up in the lures we build.

This year’s biggest question? 🪰 The mayfly hatch.

When bass are keyed in on bugs, they can be tough to fool. But trophy smallmouth still have to eat—you just need the right trigger.

⚡ Our starting lineup:

Fast snaps. Long pauses.

That erratic side-to-side action, followed by a five-second dead-stick, can turn a follower into the fish that anchors your bag.

💥 Topwater Poppers

If the hatch gets thick, we’re looking up. A loud pop over deep reefs can pull fish that would otherwise stay glued to the bottom.

🍉🎣 WATERMELON FOR THE WIN! 🎣🍉

There’s a reason Watermelon has been a Great Lakes staple for decades… but our custom Back 40 Watermelon prototype just took things up a notch. 👀

@moosari found fish holding in 80 feet of water, but they weren’t exactly in a cooperative mood. After some experimenting, the winning move was dropping the balls to 15 feet off bottom and letting that deep-diving bill hunt just above the floor.

A few passes later, this Lake Superior silver couldn’t take it anymore. 💥🐟

Now the question is…

Should we do a limited run of these Watermelon jerkbaits? 🍉
