We’re halfway through our Ma Earth crowdfunding campaign, and thanks to the incredible support of our community, we’re one step closer to restoring La Loma.

So far, 58 donors from around the world have joined this effort, helping us move toward our goal of regenerating more than 18,000 square meters of degraded land with native timber, endemic species, and fruit trees. Every contribution brings us closer to a healthier ecosystem and a stronger local food system.

One of the things that makes this campaign unique is that it rewards participation. Small donations matter because every donor helps unlock more matching funds through the Ma Earth campaign. Whether you give $5, $10, or more, your support goes even further during this limited-time opportunity.

There are only a few days left before the campaign closes.

Visit the link in our bio to learn more, support the campaign, and help us spread the word by sharing it with your friends and family. Together, we can grow lasting change. taken in Cabarete Sostenible by @moraima_cp

Can food sovereignty be a radical act of resistance when tourism is driving gentrification? 🌳🇩🇴

60% of surf resort town #Cabarete on the north coast of the #DominicanRepublic is a designated protected area, while the rest is mostly used for tourism as the area expanded with foreign investors and “expats”.

In the latest #TourismLens podcast, Moraima Capellán shares her journey of co-creating the grassroots @cabarete.sostenible NGO after facing the realities of Dominican families in this tourist “paradise.”

By restoring degraded land in a protected area for food sovereignty, Moraima’s team is building a resilient local alternative to the extractive tourism model. A community garden, a community farm using #syntropicagroforestry (regenerative techniques) and a community kitchen serving plant based garden to table Dominican lunch… plus a monthly rotation of food donations for local families in the area (300 registered on their list) most in need.

Land stewardship as economic and cultural resistance for generations to come.

And the question we really need to ask more often as travel industry consumers and players is this: why is foreign-owned tourism (in Cabarete and elsewhere) continuing to strip locals of their right to live and thrive in their backyards? Why is extractivism the status quo even in 2026?
.
For now, it’s clear that food sovereignty — led by a tight knit, committed group of residents — is a growing way to protect local communities from the foreign-led real estate boom that is accelerating and pricing locals out of their own heritage as Caribbean governments look the other way.

Moraima Capellán returned to her native Dominican Republic in 2018 to teach yoga and heal. She settled in Cabarete.

What she eventually found in this booming surf resort town on the north coast — was gentrification and stark inequality, with no Dominican-owned beachfront hotels, no local food system, and a local working class with nowhere to grow.

When the pandemic hit and hotels shut down overnight, a food crisis hit for locals. What started as emergency food aid, co-led by Moraima and her partner Papo then became @cabarete.sostenible — today a food sovereignty NGO and grassroots movement that includes a community garden, a farm,
a plant-based Dominican eatery open for lunch, plus monthly food packages for local families in need.

She also gets into the wellness industry’s role in driving inequality, what foreigners get wrong when they arrive to “help,” and whether the DR’s alleged economic boom is real.
