Morasha Winokur came back to collect her pots from our March firing @morashaw . While firing, she was on the lookout for a log that could become a throwing stick: something that can reach inside a bottle neck to form it from the inside. Finding that on a pile of split wood was problematic because the curvy logs were all crushed and splintered by the hydraulic splitter. We knew that if we did find the right log, it would yield several tools.
While planing this visit, she reminded me to keep an eye out for a log because I had been splitting a through hickory tree. I wish I’d taken a picture of the log that I found — It was where a branch crotched off the trunk, and it came apart relatively neatly with 1/4 the branch and trunk and a bunch of curves and twists still intact.
We spent a couple days in the wood shop carefully sawing it down while following the curves before carving the sticks into forms that could be useful, then sanding and oiling them.
We’ll find out soon enough whether they are useful, but more importantly we learned enough to make a next attempt more efficient 🤓 taken in Queens University of Charlotte by @morashaw

Coming off the high of @woodfirenc. So glad I was able to hobble around the main conference and help fire the kilns at the mountain preheat. I soaked up as much as I could and met and worked with so many lovely people. by @morashaw

Feeling grateful for the opportunity to have fired UM’s woodkiln this past week. It was a great firing with an incredible core-crew and great students. I loved learning with and from everyone involved. Started candling Sunday evening and fired off Friday around 3 am. Excited to unload next week! taken in Lubrecht State Experimental Forest by @morashaw

Mid-Semester Madness. So much has changed since my last post. Pandemic, graduation, moving, and now finally feeling more comfortable in my new space. Of course I’m still missing my home and my favorite people from NC. Here are a few images of experimental work, my studio space, and the time I spent away. taken in Montana by @morashaw

This semester has been insane. Grateful that I had spring break to get back in the studio for the firing this week. Here are some pots with slips from wild clay I collected during the summer. Excited to see what our wood kiln does to them. by @morashaw

This summer has been the best summer ever. Fired 2 kilns, took down one of them, and got my hands in some local clays. I’ve seen the most beautiful places and spent time with some incredible people. I’m not ready for it to be over, but I’m excited to see what this year brings. by @morashaw

My first NCECA was such an amazing experience! I learned so much about firing, terra sigillata, and clays. I loved seeing artists show case their work and seeing them in action by watching demos. Despite learning so much, The people I was with made the experience x10s better, you know who you are. I cannot wait for the next one...and the next one..and the next one. #nceca2018 by @morashaw
