Morasha Winokur came back to collect her pots from our March firing @morashaw . While firing, she was on the lookout for a log that could become a throwing stick: something that can reach inside a bottle neck to form it from the inside. Finding that on a pile of split wood was problematic because the curvy logs were all crushed and splintered by the hydraulic splitter. We knew that if we did find the right log, it would yield several tools.
While planing this visit, she reminded me to keep an eye out for a log because I had been splitting a through hickory tree. I wish I’d taken a picture of the log that I found — It was where a branch crotched off the trunk, and it came apart relatively neatly with 1/4 the branch and trunk and a bunch of curves and twists still intact.
We spent a couple days in the wood shop carefully sawing it down while following the curves before carving the sticks into forms that could be useful, then sanding and oiling them.
We’ll find out soon enough whether they are useful, but more importantly we learned enough to make a next attempt more efficient 🤓

This is my assistant Morasha and she makes incredible pots. Her work is thrown on a wheel and then gets fired in a wood or soda kiln. A lot of people don’t understand the process or the product which is our reminder to engage the artist to learn about what they do. This past weekend was Morasha’s first show! We shared a booth and had a lovely day in Marietta. Thanks to everyone who showed up to support all the people their selling their creations. Marietta Artisan Market. I’ll be back with new work on December 6th. 🔥🔥🔥 Thanks to all my local collectors who showed up. You can follow Morasha —> @morashaw . #woodfire #mugcollection #artfriends #buyartfromartists #atlantaartist @mariettaartisanmarket

This is Denny Gerwin taking over from Charlotte, NC.
Since 2012 I’ve been teaching at Queens University of Charlotte @queensuniv , a small, liberal arts institution located a couple miles from Uptown. When I interviewed, I promised to build a pizza oven to build community around working together. In 2016 I received my first internal “faculty-student summer research grant”. My superiors were surprised when I spent the entire stipend on bricks.
The first kiln was the biggest thing we could build with 1,500 bricks on the retired sidewalk behind the studio. A few years later we had raised money for a new Art, Design, and Music building. Rather than making space for the kiln yard I was imagining in the new building, we decided on the addition of an outdoor studio to our current 3D Studio Art building. @quartsatqueens
An alumna gift from Betsy Gandee Whittington, ’73, funded our new bigger kiln. Fall of 2019, my Advanced 3D Studio class built “The Betsy”, a 200-cubic-foot, stepped catenary tube kiln. The kiln is bigger than our program, which is an opportunity for visitors to fire with us. We fire every semester – 12 firings so far in addition to the 8 we had in the old Sidewalk Kiln. Two students from that class @jordankramer13 and @morashaw used another research grant to build our soda kiln the next year. It’s been fired 32 times since 2021.
3000 years of ceramic history is discussed every time we fire The Betsy. Fundamentals of clay & glaze chemistry are also wrapped into the vocabulary of firing. Most importantly, the collaborative experience of working together on something greater than any one person can do alone has helped my students understand the value of work, serving alongside others, and contributing to the whole – All transferable skills. Since 2018 I’ve had a handful of students pursue careers in ceramics, which would be hard for them to imagine from our tiny BA program if not for the practices they’ve established around our kilns.

Also, the Betsy works exceptionally well. We burn about 5 cords of wood in 72hrs. The flue gets to cone 12 before the front gets to cone 9. The door is 69" (175cm) tall - great for my back and loading big work.

NCECA SLC was so wonderful. I attended some fantastic exhibitions, and great lectures/panel discussions, but the best part was seeing my ceramics community. Also, I had never been to Utah before.. it was my 48th state!! I can’t wait for Detroit next year!

We unloaded an excellent firing today! The 11th firing of The Betsy and our 19th firing @queensuniv
The crew was an ideal mix of students, alumni, and visitors. As usual, the back of the kiln ran hot, which is a problem we love to solve.
Big thanks to the teammates who helped prepare us for success, and to the ones who saw it through.
