Moravian OT, PT, and Nursing students teamed up across local senior living communities to educate, screen, and identify fall risks while sharing strategies to help older adults stay safe and independent.

Well, we’re a week in to the new semester and things around campus have been pretty incredible! Welcome back to all of our returning students and a huge welcome to our new students who are embarking on their nursing journey! We can’t forget about all of you who have been continuing your learning over the summer with us too! We hope that Moravian University becomes a second home for you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of your nursing faculty or staff if there is anything that you might need - we are truly here for you and your journey.

Dr. Lugo collaborated with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (@iblce ) to create a webinar for anyone who provides lactation care:

Communicating Expertise with Care: Inclusive, Trust-Building Approaches in Lactation Practice explores communication strategies that foster trust and emotional safety, the use of inclusive and accessible language, how to recognize and repair eroded trust, and how to self-reflect and remain aware of bias to promote equitable family-centered lactation care. 🚨Faculty Achievement Alert! 🚨

For the last year, Dr. Karen Groller (@drkarenyogi ) has worked with the clinical issues committee of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) as the nursing representative on their task force. One of her first tasks was to help produce a literature review on re-operative metabolic and bariatric surgery for chronic complications. 📑

As graduation weekend winds down and we reflect on the last few days (and years!), the faculty and staff in the School of Nursing are reminded of how proud we are of all our new graduates who have earned new letters behind their names 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️

To our nursing graduates:

Remember who you were when you came to @moravianuniversity and reflect on who you are today. The journey that you took may not have been the most conventional, there might have been life events and barriers along the way, significant ups and downs, relationships made, relationships lost. Regardless of the circumstances on your journey - you are here today. You graduated. You have accomplished something that seemed like a dream, because it was your dream.

✈️ Last month, five of our soon-to-be graduating nursing students had the incredible opportunity to attend the @nsnainc Convention in Houston, Texas! Here, they learned about their professional responsibilities, had the opportunity to display their research, and attend development workshops. Of course, they also had time to explore and enjoy the city too! 🌇

Earlier this week at the @moravianuniversity end of semester Provost Awards & Celebration, THREE of our nursing faculty were recognized for their contributions to the School of Nursing and University as a whole 🎉

✵ Dr. John C. Mikovits received the Teaching Excellence Award - exemplifying excellence in teaching, mastery of subject matter, effective communication, engagement, adaptability, student-centeredness, assessment, lifelong learning, and reflection. 📚
✵ Dr. Alissa Butler received the Advising Excellence Award - demonstrating excellence in academic advising marked by personalized guidance, comprehensive support, accessibility, expertise, empowerment, advocacy, cultural competence, inclusivity, and a commitment to continuous improvement. 🤝
✵ Dr. Elise Colancecco was recognized for her continuous contributions of teaching, scholarship, and service to the University by earning Tenure and Promotion to Associate Professor 🍾

Proud School of Nursing Faculty Alert! 🚨

Recently, Dr. Anita Lugo published her work in conjunction with International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Day. This day is celebrated on March 4th to recognize the expertise and dedication of IBCLCs in supporting breastfeeding families. It honors their role in improving global health! Dr. Lugo, CPNP-PC, IBCLC published A Concept Analysis of Breastfeeding Support in the March/April issue of The American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing, 51(2), 98-105.

Our hearts are hurting with the Moravian community. Mary Beth Spirk was a gem. A true champion for students beyond the athlete in them. She prioritized students in everything that she did. Her willingness to put academics first while allowing students to reach their highest potential as collegiate athletes is at the forefront of the successes that she has achieved in her storied career. Faculty, staff, and students in the School of Nursing appreciate her commitment to our nursing students’ rigorous academic needs and athletic drive. We are grateful for the standard that she set at Moravian University. Our thoughts are with all of those who are feeling the hurt of this loss. 💙🐾 by @moravianunursing
