Cedarblad 111 and GN 11.07.3 — a future planetary system.

The orange-yellow cone is the brighter half of an hourglass shaped nebula. Between the two is a very small dark area which may be the material forming a new solar system. This is set in a region of the Cederblad 111 molecular cloud lit by a bright blue star.

14 billion years after the big bang new worlds are still forming!

LDN 204 —-> LDN 134 | A Pair of Dust Clouds in Space

LDN = Lynds Dark Nebula. Lynd was an astronomer who cataloged clouds of dust and gas in space. These dark nebulae are dense enough to block the starlight behind them. But amazingly, these dark clouds are 250 billion times less dense than the air we breathe. Each cubic centimeter might have only 100-1000 atoms of material. Because they can be many light years thick they add up enough to fully block starlight.

NGC 3199 | A Wolf-Rayet Star’s Bubble
***
The blue arc at the bottom (likely green in an eyepiece) prompts the informal title of The Banana Nebula. That banana shines in the Oxygen wavelength here but also is bright in X-ray. Wolf-Rayet star 18 spawned this bubble. It is a massive, ultra hot star that has blown off its out hydrogen and is now fusing helium in its core. I’m shooting a number of these now as I really like the dramatic bubble shaped nebulae they produce.

NGC 3628 | The Hamburger Galaxy
***
No need to explain the name of this one. The dust lane makes the beef patty, the mature stars of the arms make the bun, we have some little red hydrogen emissions making the dabs of ketchup, and is that blue cheese squeezing out the ends?

This somewhat dim galaxy is 35,000,000 light years away. Still I believe some of the blue giant stars are resolved here.

The Seagull Nebula —-> slide for starless

Please do zoom in. So much going on in this nebula. It doesn’t really have a single catalog number. It’s 3650 light years away and huge in the sky at 240 light years across.

NGC 5189 | A Wolf-Rayet Binary
***
The oxygen dominated blue lobes are not uncommon for recent stellar outbursts, but the reddish “rope” that wraps around the lobes is unusual. If you look close you can see how it is in front of the lobes in places and behind in others. The Ha and SII dominated rope is believed to be caused by tidal forces from a white dwarf companion star orbiting the WR star about every four days.

LBN 420 | Galileo’s Finger

Wispy clouds of space dust have been blown to resemble Galileo’s actual finger. That finger is 500 years old so it’s not looking its best these days. Slide to see a current shot of his finger in the Museo Galileo in Florence.

NGC 1398 | A barred spiral galaxy 65 million light-years distant.
***
This galaxy appears quite symmetrical at first glance but look more closely at the core. The core is almost round while the encircling arms form an ellipse. The galaxy is actually inclined about 45 degrees to our view so the outer arms tell the correct story. But this means the circular inner ring is not round but instead is an oval with the long side marked by the central bar. Since that bar is pointing at us the long side is foreshortened creating the circular illusion.
