Introducing Astrophotography Prize Judge, Kevin Morefield. With a lifelong passion for astronomy and a university degree in photography, Kevin has been photographing eclipses since 2002 and began deep-space imaging in 2014. He has operated imaging setups at Sierra Remote Observatories in California (2016–2022), Obstech in Chile (2022–present), and Howling Coyote Remote in New Mexico (2024–present). His work has earned notable recognition, including a cover feature in Sky & Telescope magazine, 45 AstroBin Images of the Day, shortlist placements for the 2023 and 2024 Royal Greenwich Astrophotographer of the Year, and runner-up in the Deep Sky category of the Australian Photographic Prize.

A very beautiful capture of brilliant, vivid blue stars lighting up the astronomical dust cloud known as Lupus 3. This area is estimated to be about 550 light-years away. Lupus 3 or GN 16.05.2 (Bernes 149) is located at the border of the Scorpius and Lupus constellations.

NGC 2018 | A Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud *** Because this nebula resides in a different galaxy at a distance of 158,000 light years, we are able to see its full structure. We also see several star clusters dotted around it. By comparison, the more well known Orion Nebula is 100 times nearer at 1500 light years away. *** 57.5 Hours SHORGB data Planewave CDK17 ATIK ApX60 Planewave L-600

New Discovery: Williams-Jones-1, the Oyster Nebula

We are excited to announce a new discovery in Carina, Williams-Jones-1. This new object spans roughly 6.2 x 3.5 arcmins, and the discovery is the result of around 120 hours of exposure time from Steve Jones, @sean.makin, and @morefield. While the nature is unconfirmed, it is likely either a planetary nebula or ISM feature.

The final image is a result of 30 hours of imaging done by Kevin using with his CDK17 in Chile.

We hope you like this new discovery!

It is not everyday that a friend let you borrow his CDK17 with some of the best skies in the world in Chile to shoot whatever you want…! Thanks @morefield for this opportunity!

My target of choice was M83, a beautiful spiral galaxy approximately 15 million light-years away in the constellation borders of Hydra and Centaurus. It is very similar to what our own Milky Way looks like.

CG30 | A Mountain of Gasses sculpted by a SuperNova.
***
These cometary globules are something like hoodoos. A hoodoo is a standing pillar that is a bit denser than the surrounding material so it stands up to the rain longer. In this case the winds of a supernova have blown the less dense material back first leaving the more dense peaks behind. This is one of a few CG objects that encircle a supernova in the Gum Nebula.

Join us at Artspace 304 today, Saturday, April 6 at 2pm, for a solar eclipse and photography lecture titled, “Deep Space” by Astrophotographer Kevin Morefield. Morefield, originally from Murphysboro, calls his work “The Blurring of Art and Science." He states: "Much remains to be learned about the Universe, in fact, nearly everything. But also there is beauty. Between the learning and the aesthetic is where lies my interest."

While you're here, experience the eclipse with our arts and science installation "Passing into Shadow" and pick up a pair of solar eclipse viewing glasses for free - while supplies last.

Artspace 304 is open extended hours this Solar Eclipse Weekend: Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4pm. 2024 Solar Eclipse Programming is underwritten by our Premier Sponsor Banterra Bank. This work is made possible by the Simons Foundation and is part of its ‘In the Path of Totality’ initiative. For more information, visit inthepathoftotality.org
