Just received the July issue of @jewishcurrentsmag with a lovely piece on OPEN by @babywasu

“Morgan Ashcom's photographs of life in Palestine are imbued with a supernatural aura. Images of stacked cement blocks, butcher displays of hanging carcasses, posters commemorating martyrs, and other quotidian scenes are obscured by brilliant washes of color. This ombré effect, which gives the impression of a haunting, recalls the work of 19th-century practitioners of "spirit photography who experimented with doubled exposures or reflective surfaces, creating layered images that make visible the ghostly ambiences that seem to cling to certain people and objects.” by @morganashcom

Dad would have been 79 tomorrow. Sorting through his things has taken a lot of time but my family found some new treasures. First photo is of dad roping cattle. He competed in tie down roping. The second photo is of my brother and I with a Timber Wolf. I have no memory of the moment. Shit was different back in the 1900s yall. by @morganashcom

On Oct 11th 2001 @sagefrancissfr released this free download of Makeshift Patriot. It’s a rageful and clear-eyed view of the larger context of 9/11 with emotional lyrics of lived experiences on that day. At the time, it was taboo to voice any of this in public. It felt like a crime to download and play this song in my freshman dorm room. Lyrics below:

I’m tired of hearing of young fellows, who think you know it all.

You know nothing, you have not seen a shot fired,
and you’re waving the damn flag.

Frank, what’s that man?

I’m just watching some bullshit.
On the news. It’s fucking bullshit.
Reporters trying to win a fucking emmy.

Makeshift patriot,
the flag shop is out of stock,
I hang myself at half mast.

Coming live from my own funeral
Beautiful weather offered a nice shine,
Which is suitable for a full view of a forever altered skyline.

Using commercial aviation as instruments of destruction.
Pregnant women couldn’t protect their children;
wheelchairs were stairway obstructions.

I had to back-pedal from the shower of glass and metal,
wondering if after it settles,
we’ll find who provided power to radical rebels.

The melting pot seems to be calling the kettle black when it boils over,
but only on our own soil,
so the little boy holds a toy soldier,
and waits for the suit and tie to come home.

We won’t wait till he’s older, though,
before we destroy hopes for a colder war to end.
I’ll get a close-up of his head.

In my earlier work I was photographing in spaces that reminded me of rural settings I grew up in. Eventually I brought all of these photographs together in a book, called What the Living Carry that centered on a fictional town called Hoys Fork.

I’m offering uneditioned 11x14s of this photo along with the photos in the last 3 posts in my feed for $150. Editioned and framed pieces are also available DM me if you’re interested.

I appreciate everyone who has messaged me with support and interest in buying prints. A few have asked if I can ship prints domestically and internationally. The answer is yes!

Back in 2012 while I was working on What the Living Carry, I photographed the Hoys Fork courthouse as it was being rebuilt. That’s the black and white image in this post. The courthouse had burned to the ground the previous year. I’ve returned there over the years to make pictures and one time ran into Bubba who was painting from memory the night of the fire. We spoke about the numerous theories swirling around town and afterwards he and I made the color photograph in this post.

This was an early moment where I started working on The Abstract Land & Filing Co. I’ll share a little more on that in my next post. by @morganashcom
